Darren Wang has been sentenced to six months in prison in a case linked to a draft dodging scheme in Taiwan.
The actor, whose sentence is commutable to a fine, received judgment from the New Taipei District Court on 22 April for contravening the Personal Data Protection Act, after illegally obtaining and using the personal data of Chen Cheh-ming, who masterminded the draft dodging syndicate.
The court, however, acquitted him of illegal collection of personal information.
It was reported Darren paid NTD 3.6 million to an illegal group led by Chen to help him evade mandatory military service by falsifying his medical documents. Chen is known to have been accused of helping a number of Taiwanese celebrities in similar cases as well, including ENERGY member, Chang Shu-wei.
However, the effort was unfruitful after Chen was arrested in February 2025 on separate drug-related charges.
Darren subsequently reported Chen to the police for fraud, believing that the latter had fled with his money. This led to Darren himself being investigated after authorities found messages on his phone suggesting that he and his associates had sought assistance through both legal and criminal channels to obtain personal data in order to locate Chen.
Darren is able to appeal the case.
