Cha Eun-woo has now apologised over allegations that he has failed to pay his taxes worth billions of won.
On 26 January, the singer-actor, who is currently serving in the military, released a statement on his personal account, saying, “I will faithfully participate in the tax-related procedures that will be carried out in the future. In addition, I will humbly accept the final decision made by the relevant authorities and take responsibility for it.”
“I am deeply reflecting on whether I was strict enough in my attitude toward my tax obligations as a citizen of the Republic of Korea through this incident. Over the past few days, I have spent time reflecting, thinking about what I should say first so that I can convey my apology, even if only a little, to those who were hurt by me.”
He also denied speculations that he fled to the military after being embroiled in the suspicion of tax evasion.
“Last year, I was in a situation where I could no longer postpone my military enlistment, so I enlisted without completing the tax investigation process. However, this was also a misunderstanding that arose from my shortcomings, so I feel deeply responsible,” he added.
Prior to his apology, it was revealed that the National Tax Service had notified Cha of additional income tax assessments totaling more than 20 billion won (approx. USD 13.9 million).
