Sabrina Carpenter has recently apologised after being accused of being xenophobic, following her remarks about the Arabic celebratory ululation called Zaghrouta.

The singer, who recently performed a successful headliner at Coachella, took to X to respond to the backlash, apologised and explained that she actually couldn’t hear or see the person who was doing the celebratory call when it happened.

“My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out,” she wrote.

In the now-viral clip that had many West Asians inflamed, Sabrina, who was performing, suddenly stopped after hearing the crowd doing the zaghrouta and quickly enquired about the sound. She then commented that she didn’t like it.

When the audience yelled back that it was part of the culture, the singer-songwriter responded, “That’s your culture, is yodeling?”

The fan then explained it was a call of celebration, to which Sabrina responded: “Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”

Netizens immediately took to social media to blast the “Manchild” singer, calling her racist and a xenophobe for her comments.
