The globally acclaimed Japanese dance group Avantgardey brought their electrifying Asia Tour to a packed house at Zepp KL last Saturday evening, delivering a performance that seamlessly blended their signature precision choreography with unexpected local flavours.
The 17-member ensemble from Osaka, who shot to international fame following their viral appearances on “America’s Got Talent” has been making waves across Asia. Their rising profile was further elevated when they delivered a special performance for celebrated Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Chow for his birthday in June.

The group’s performance last Saturday was marked by their trademark precision, with their school uniform-inspired costumes and synchronized movements creating mesmerizing visual patterns that had the audience captivated. The group leader’s charming interaction with the crowd, complete with endearing accented English, fostered a connection with the audiences who joined in enthusiastically with cheers and chants.
One of the evening’s standout moments came through a masterful tribute to Whitney Houston, with one of the dancers embodying the late icon in both appearance and mannerisms. Her lip-sync performance of “I Will Always Love You” captured Houston’s signature movements with remarkable accuracy, particularly during the song’s iconic high notes, drawing enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

In a delightful surprise that sent waves of excitement through the venue, Avantgardey performed a specially choreographed medley of Malaysian songs, including “Rasa Sayang” and “Alamak Raya Lagi!”
Popular trio 3P, comprising Danny Lee, Kevin Ong and Caven Tang, were the guest performers and they seamlessly integrated their performances with the group’s intricate choreography.
Avantgardey’s Malaysian stop proved that they are a dynamic ensemble capable of connecting with audiences across cultural boundaries while respecting and incorporating local elements into their spectacular shows.
