Anita Mui’s brother Mui Kai-ming had everybody scratching their heads recently, after announcing that he would be arranging the funeral for his mother Tam Mei Kam (aka Mother Mui) who died late last month.
In a press conference held at a restaurant in Causeway Bay on 6 September, Mui, whose mother-son relationship with Mother Mui was severed by the mother herself a few years ago, announced the details of the arrangements for his mother’s wake, funeral and burial to the media and said, “I want to arrange a proper funeral for my mother, Tam Mei Kam, using a burial ceremony so that she can rest peacefully in a grave forever.”
“We are using one of the top funeral service companies for this funeral. The estimated cost for the permanent grave, funeral parlour hall, offerings and chanting by senior monks is about HKD 1.5 million,” he added.
Mui Kai-ming said that as Mother Mui’s eldest son, he wanted his mother to have a dignified funeral, and that it was his responsibility to handle her affairs after her death, rather than having her grandchildren and outsiders quietly arrange for her to be cremated.
He said that he had already discussed the burial arrangements with senior management at the funeral parlour and that his mother would be buried at the Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery.
When asked how he would pay for all of that, Mui gave the ambiguous answer of “Money will come from somewhere.”
“Whether I can access the fund is another matter. In any case, my mother will definitely have a grand funeral. Wherever I go, money will fall from the sky. As for where it will come from, that’s a secret,” he said.
It is noted that Mui Kai-ming previously said that he hoped to use the money from the Anita Mui inheritance to pay for the funeral.
As to Poon Siu Man’s previous statement saying that Mother Mui had appointed her grandson from another son, Mui Tak Mung, to be the executor for her funeral arrangements, he responded, “I don’t care what my nephew does. In any case, he cannot mess with my mother’s body.”
