Yu Haoming recently revealed that he faced tough challenges following the facial scars he sustained over the premature explosion on the set of the drama “I Have a Date with Spring” in 2010.

In a recent documentary film, “Because I Want to Write a Song” (translated title), Yu said that the tragedy, which he sustained third-degree burns to more than 30 percent of his body, not only brought him excruciating pain but also destroyed his idol status.

Yu stated that when he returned to the entertainment industry, reality dealt him a heavy blow: production teams refused to offer him roles because of his facial scars, and some even advised him to “stop acting.”

He said, “I can no longer rely on the face of the past to win back the face I want now. Then I thought, I don’t need to care about my face!”

Yu said that his transformation started with “self-destruction” of his idol image. He began to take on roles of characters who had to struggle and suffer through hardship, even winning an award for his role in “Nothing Gold Can Stay”.

The sense of hardship bestowed by his scars became a unique asset in interpreting complex human nature, he said, adding, “When playing these roles, I could use all the pain I had experienced.”
