Following the success of “The Last Dance,” it was recently announced that Anselm Chan has gathered the original actors to star in his new movie, tentatively titled, “1971”.
On 8 July, Emperor Motion Pictures revealed the new project, which focuses on the historical turning point in Hong Kong history when the government passed the Marriage Reform Ordinance, establishing monogamy as the only legal form of marriage.
Speaking about the film, the filmmaker stated that he has always wanted to make a film set in the 1950s and 1960s.
“So, my team and I worked hard to find interesting themes within that era, until we came up with the idea of ’monogamy.’ While marriage is a taken-for-granted relationship in our modern eyes, before 1960, the Great Qing Legal Code allowed men to have multiple wives and concubines. Therefore, the process of the transformation from a system of concubines to the current monogamous system is the direction for my story,” he said.

Aside from Dayo Wong, Michelle Wai and Michael Hui, Anselm said that he is also elated to be able to cast Iain Glen, star of “Game of Thrones” to join the project. He added that the Scottish actor’s role in the movie is very special, and declined to share more about it.
The upcoming movie will also co-star Karena Lam, Alex Fong, Louis Cheung, Carlos Chan and Philip Ng among others.
