A vibrant travelling exhibition traces centuries of culinary craftsmanship, bringing Japanese food culture to Malaysian audiences.

Malaysian food lovers are getting a rare treat this month as Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) brings “I Love Sushi” – an immersive exhibition celebrating one of the world’s most beloved dishes – to the capital.

Running from November 14 through December 31 at Ur-Mu @ The Toffee in Bukit Bintang, this isn’t your typical food exhibition. Think less “look at pretty pictures of fish” and more “deep dive into centuries of Japanese culinary evolution.”

More Than Just Raw Fish

Organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan, Urban Museum Kuala Lumpur, and Sushi Hibiki, the exhibition reimagines sushi as what it truly is: a cultural masterpiece that reflects Japan’s creativity, precision, and profound respect for nature.

Visitors can explore how sushi evolved from an ancient preservation method to the elegant nigiri-zushi of the Edo period, eventually becoming the global phenomenon we know today. The exhibition features captivating visuals, interactive displays, and digital experiences – including a virtual reality “sushi shop” that lets you step into an authentic Japanese sushi-making environment.

Master Chef in the House

The opening will feature an exclusive demonstration by Chef Makoto Saito Sam, owner of Sushi Hibiki and a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador. Known for his dedication to authentic Japanese cuisine in Malaysia, Chef Saito will conduct a sushi-making demonstration, tasting session, and talk offering behind-the-scenes insights into Japan’s dynamic sushi culture.

It’s a chance to understand the artistry and precision that goes into every roll, every slice, and every perfectly formed piece of nigiri.

A Taste of Cultural Exchange

Part of a decade-long world tour that began in 2022, “I Love Sushi” serves as a bridge between cultures, proving that food – much like art – has the power to connect people across borders.

After its KL run, the exhibition will travel to Terengganu and Kota Kinabalu, giving sushi enthusiasts and culture lovers across Malaysia a chance to experience Japan’s timeless culinary story.
