CoCo Lee’s family has recently released a statement, after a netizen revealed that they were able to log into the singer’s music platform account using their new phone number.
Back on 11 October, a netizen stated that they recently purchased a new registered mobile phone number and decided to register for a new account on NetEase Cloud Music. However, the netizen was surprised to find that the number had brought them to CoCo’s official account.
The netizen also exposed a large number of messages from the late singer’s fans to prove their words.
In response, CoCo’s elder sister Nancy Lee released a statement on social media, urging the public to protect and respect the deceased.
She wrote, “As CoCo’s second sister, I deeply understand the love every fan has for CoCo. Those unopened private messages and comments represent the unspoken longing in everyone’s hearts. All of CoCo’s social media and music platform accounts were registered by her team and later managed by CoCo herself and the team. We originally believed these accounts would naturally be preserved, leaving behind traces of CoCo’s presence online and giving fans a place to remember her. We didn’t expect something like this to happen, and we feel deeply regretful.”
NetEase Cloud Music has also responded to the issue, saying, “After investigation, we found that the mobile phone number originally associated with CoCo Lee’s team was reassigned by the telecom operator. The platform has immediately contacted the new number user to handle the matter.”
Nancy said this incident forced them to face a pressing issue in the digital age, which is how to protect the dignity and peace of the deceased.
“After CoCo’s passing, we have witnessed many things, from unauthorised use of AI, as well as constant online misinformation and rumours. Since then, my family and I have had to repeatedly step forward to clarify matters, even resorting to legal action to defend our rights… This made me realise how significant the impact of the online environment truly is.”
