William So has finally broken his silence amid the controversy surrounding the cancellation of his concerts in China due to a past drug scandal.

On 23 September, the Hong Kong singer posted his statement on social media, apologising to everybody for occupying public resources with news of a mistake that he had done 23 years ago.

He continued, “I deeply understand that the stain of a mistake is never fully erasable. Not a single day over these past 23 years that I have forgotten the wrong I’ve made. I never even attempted to forget it. Instead, I often recall it to remind myself to walk each step of life carefully going forward. I also hope that my mistake and its consequences will serve as a lesson for everyone. Life cannot be a one-time thing; we must be cautious in our words and actions.”

William said that throughout the 23 years since the scandal, he has continually worked to rebuild his life as a son, husband and father.

“In the days ahead, I will continue striving to live by the teaching that ‘to know one’s error and change is the greatest virtue.’ I say these things not in hope that my stain will be erased, but only hoping that through my efforts it may gradually fade… change colour… and eventually become a scar that brings encouragement,” he added.

It is noted that William’s October concert in Wenzhou has been cancelled after netizens dug up news of his past drug arrest and rehabilitation in 2002.

In 2002, the singer was found guilty of illicit drug use in Taipei, which led to a period of cancellation before his return in 2007.

He is now married to wife Anita Fung, with their son Jazz born in 2017.
