Finally releasing the film after ten years in production, Juno Mak finally unveils the finished version of “Sons of the Neon Night”.
Speaking to reporters during his appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker said that the film actually finished its principle shooting in 2017, and that the delay happened during postproduction when the COVID-19 pandemic happened.
“Especially because Sons of The Neon Night revolves around heavy CGI, it has taken quite some time,” he said.

He also admitted that getting the film financed was also a challenge, seeing that a lot of investors were more interested to finance a sequel to his hit film, “Rigor Mortis” rather than a new movie altogether.
“It would have been easier if I had made that choice, but I felt that as a filmmaker, it’s more important to find your truth, so back then, I didn’t want to cage myself working on the same genre,” he added.
Starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Tony Leung Kar Fai, Louis Koo and Sean Lau among others, the film tells the story of a detective who goes against the successor to a drug-trafficking crime syndicate, who aspires for a society free of drugs by orchestrating anarchy in Hong Kong.
