After revealing that he enjoyed working with Wong Kar Wai the most, Tony Leung Chiu Wai said that he is unsure when the two of them will be working together again.
The actor, who returned to Hong Kong to promote his new movie, “Silent Friend,” said that he dares not say whether or not he will reunite with the Hong Kong auteur, as anything is possible.
“My film career has been divided into several stages. First, director Hou Hsiao-hsien inspired me. The second stage involved 20 years of collaboration with Wong Kar Wai, which honed my skills and helped me find my acting style. Now it’s the third stage,” he said.
Tony said that he has stepped out of his comfort zone in recent years and started doing projects that he used to feel uncomfortable with, such as going to Hollywood to film “Shang-Chi”.
“I’m currently in the later stages of my acting career, and I feel it’s important to film the movies I like. I don’t want to sacrifice time to film movies I don’t like anymore, because filming requires a lot of physical and mental effort,” he said.
The actor also admitted that after working with Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi on the new movie, he is now more open to working with other directors.
Tony and Wong last worked together on 2013’s “The Grandmaster”.
