Joey Wong recently addressed her early retirement for the first time, decades after she decided to leave the entertainment industry.
The actress, who gained fame for her ethereal beauty after starring in movies like “A Chinese Ghost Story” and “City Hunter,” shared in an interview with Li Dan that she had never really adapted to life in showbiz.
Joey said that back when she was an actress, she was driven to and from the film set every day and was almost completely isolated from the outside world during work. However, when she went out, a large number of strangers knew who she was, and this contrast made her feel uncomfortable at times.
She admitted that she actually contemplated retiring back when she was 28, after realising that she did not enjoy the celebrity life despite her considerable fame.
Joey then decided to reduce her output of work, and officially faded out of the entertainment industry after filming “Shanghai Story” in 2004. Since then, she has lived in Canada and run a moxibustion wellness centre in Vancouver.
As to rumours that she retired because of a heartbreak, the actress denied this, saying that it was solely due to her inner state, as she suffered mental pressure from fear of public scrutiny.
However, Joey said that in recent years, she has no longer avoided the outside world, and has become more willing to connect with people.
