After receiving a threat of legal action, a social media user named Bai Shanshan decided to apologise for their recent post about actor Leo Wu (Wu Lei), saying that it was a joke with a friend “with the same name”.
The user explains that they initially intended to joke with a friend who shared the same name as the actor, but they tagged the actor to gain attention after their own account was blocked, which led to serious negative consequences. The user expresses deep regret and promises to be more careful with their words in the future.
The whole issue sparked after the said Weibo user took to social media on 18 January and claimed to have photos of celebrities in bed. They then challenged Leo, saying, “How are you going to repay what you owe me?” and sparked speculations among netizens.
However, Leo was quick to respond via his Weibo account, saying that he doesn’t know the said netizen and has entrusted his lawyer to pursue legal action.
His studio also subsequently reported his statement, adding, “Mr. Wu Lei has no prior acquaintance with this blogger and has no connection whatsoever! We also thank all the friends who care about and speak out for Mr. Wu Lei. We will actively respond to such despicable behaviour and will definitely pursue our legal rights to the end!”
It is noted that prior to Bai Shanshan’s claim that it was a joke, they tried to claim that their account had been hacked.
However, after verification, Weibo stated that the so-called “account hacking” did not occur, as the login device and the usual location of the account were normal, the two-factor authentication was enabled during registration and required SMS verification from a new device to log in.
