Three years after he was arrested, Kuo Shu-yao’s younger brother Kuo Po-ting is finally being sentenced for helping Chinese spies setting up organisation in Taiwan.

Kuo and two others were sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison, after they provided bank accounts and help Republic of China Diabolo Federation board member Lu Chi-hsien develop the organisation and were paid for it.

The case is subject to appeal.

Since 2022, Lu, who was once a champion in diabolo and later served as a coach, has contacted and recruited retired non-commissioned officers and soldiers from six army camps to collect military intelligence.

When asked for response over the sentencing, Kuo Shu-yao (known to fans as Yao Yao), spoke via her agency, “Everything will be handled by the relevant departments. Thank you for your hard work.”

Two years ago, when asked about her brother’s involvement in the case, the actress admitted that she was shocked. She also said that her brother had sent her a message to apologise and that she was so angry that she didn’t plan to stay in contact with him.

Yao Yao also urged her brother to “face whatever responsibilities he needs to take on.”
