The Boney M 50th Anniversary Tour show at Mega Star Arena last night proved that disco fever is still alive and kicking in Kuala Lumpur. If the measure of a successful concert is getting the audience to their feet, dancing and singing along, then this show was an unequivocal triumph.
From the moment the show opened with AirAsia Dancers performing to “One Way Ticket” (how apt!), the energy in the arena was electric. Their dazzling smiles and synchronised moves perfectly set the stage for what was to come.

When original Boney M member Maizie Williams appeared, the crowd of 3,000 erupted in thunderous applause, many audience members sparkling in their 70s-inspired disco outfits. The audience was a beautiful mix of generations – those who grew up dancing to these hits in their youth now sharing the experience with their children, creating new memories together. It was heartwarming to see young kids bouncing to the same beats that had their parents grooving decades ago.
The massive LED backdrop pulsed with psychedelic patterns and swirling retro visuals that instantly transported us back to the heyday of disco, setting the perfect atmosphere for the night ahead.

The magic truly began when the first notes of “Sunny” and “Daddy Cool” filled the arena. Williams, accompanied by her talented ensemble of singers – Kelly Rahman, Samantha Eletha Scott, and Doreen Patel – had such commanding stage presence that we couldn’t help but move to the music. When they encouraged us to stand up and dance, the entire arena leaped to their feet without hesitation.
The hits kept coming throughout the night. The energetic performance of “Belfast” early in the show set a high bar for what was to come. “Ma Baker” had us grooving, “Brown Girl in the Ring” had us singing along, and “Rasputin” had everyone channeling their inner disco dancer. “Rivers of Babylon” transformed the arena into one massive chorus, with parents lifting their children onto shoulders to get a better view of the spectacle.

For many of us who grew up with these songs playing on radio and at family gatherings, it was more than just a concert – it was a joyful reunion with the music that shaped our lives. The enthusiasm was contagious, crossing age barriers as both young and old found themselves caught up in the infectious rhythms of these timeless classics.
Williams and her ensemble didn’t just perform the songs; they recreated the magic that made Boney M a global phenomenon in the 70s. Their infectious energy and electrifying stage presence proved that great music truly is timeless.
As the night drew to a close with the pulsating beats of “Gotta Go Home,” it was clear that while we might have left the 70s behind, the spirit of disco, and Boney M, lives on in every generation.
