Wang Kai has recently opened up about his hiatus, after disappearing from the screen for over two years.
The “Nirvana in Fire” actor recently sat down with interviewer Chen Luyu, where he revealed that his silence was not due to the lack of acting opportunities, but that the offers that came to him were unchallenging.
Wang Kai added that the similar acting roles that were offered and the rapid growth of short-form vertical dramas that led to a significant reduction in production funding for traditional long-form dramas, have made good scripts extremely scarce.

Stressing that “taking a proper rest is more important than doing meaningless work,” Wang Kai decided to dedicate time to his own health, especially since he underwent surgery in 2017 due to nodules found in his lungs.
The actor shared that he has now slowly returned back to work, and has taken a role in the new drama, “The Long Watch,” in which he plays a national security officer, a departure from the types of roles and the image he has been most associated with in the past.
