Having played “ordinary” roles in the past year, Wayne Lai recently stated that he has no issue not being the lead actor anymore in his 60s.
The 62-year-old actor, who is currently promoting his new drama, “The Map of Truth,” admitted to have reduced his projects in recent years as he enters a new phase of life.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve definitely accumulated a lot of viewers. When I go out for tea, buy groceries at the market, or even on the street, viewers ask if I’m no longer making dramas. Many viewers say they miss me. After all, we’ve built such a long relationship, there’s a sense of connection. I think that’s the greatest reward for a television actor,” he said.
Wayne said he has never had any baggage since entering the industry, and he would absolutely accept the role that often requires him to play strange and mischievous characters.
“To be honest, when I entered the industry, I never thought I would become famous. Back then, everyone was handsome and beautiful, tall and big. Someone like me, to put it bluntly, was destined to be a supporting actor. So, I have never had any baggage. Plus, I have been honing my skills in this industry for so long. I spent more than ten years as an extra, more than ten years as a supporting actor, and it took me more than twenty years to become a leading actor. I’ve been worn down to the point that I would have left long ago if I didn’t care!” he said.
He said that even though he has won the Best Actor award three times, there are still no roles he would mind playing. He believes that as long as the audience finishes watching the show, laughs happily all night, and then goes to sleep with a cheerful mood, that is his greatest achievement as an actor.
