While he is no AI hater when it comes to using it for research purposes, Tony Leung Chiu Wai recently stated that he is not one to say yes to allowing it to use his likeness and voice for future works.

Speaking about the topic recently at the media conference for the Shanghai International Film Festival, the award-winning thespian said even if the technology is realistic, the audience’s viewing experience would be completely different.

He used the analogy of real and fake diamonds, saying, “Current technology can already make diamonds that are exactly the same as real ones, but the feeling of holding a ‘cultured diamond’ and a ‘natural diamond’ in your hand is different.”

Tony stated that there’s just no comparison at the moment, as AI lacks consciousness, unless it actually gains consciousness the same way as humans possess it.

“If that day comes, it will have its own thoughts and its own ability to create. But for now, there’s simply no soul inside it. Unless you are able to hide from the audience that the actor is CGI or AI, the moment they notice, they will think, ‘Oh, that’s not real.’ And that will immediately break the immersion and affect their entire viewing experience,” he said.
