Making his return as the voice of Woody in the Hong Kong dubbed version of “Toy Story 5,” Dicky Cheung joked that he hopes to be the “Bowie Wu of voice acting”.
The actor, who appeared at the premiere of the Disney-Pixar animated feature recently, mentioned that it has been almost eight years since his last voice acting role, and he hopes to continue working even as he gets older.
“If Tom Hanks can do it, so can I! This voice acting work is one of the most memorable works in my acting career. In the past, I’ve played roles like Sun Wukong and Wai Siupo, but only the older generation might recognise them; children might not. Only this animated character has made me known to both generations,” he said.
Asked if he would like to break the Guinness World Record like 94-year-old Bowie Wu, who recently became the oldest Chinese performer to hold a concert, he lightheartedly responded, “Yes, that’s my goal. I can still do voice acting at 94. I’ve even signed up Sean Lau with me; he’s done voice acting many times, just like me. It’s like we’ve signed a longevity contract.”
When asked if his remuneration would increase with his status as a “veteran,” he frankly said, “I have no bottom line for ‘Toy Story,’ I’ll do as much as I can. The most important thing is that they don’t replace me and continue to let me be Woody.”
