Tony Leung Kar Fai recently admitted that he did not expect at all to win Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony.
The actor, who rushed to the dinner event after flying in from Beijing, said that he was only there to show support, and was pleasantly surprised to be announced Best Actor for his role in “The Shadow’s Edge”.
“It was great to see old and new friends and colleagues from the film industry. Everyone was gathered together, and it gave me hope for Hong Kong cinema,” he said.
When asked if he wanted to pass on the torch to the next generation of actors, he said that since the golden age of Hong Kong cinema, he had talked for many years about a talent gap in the film industry. Now, seeing the new generation of filmmakers working hard and performing very well, he believes he can help them continue their cinematic dreams.
When asked if he was confident of winning another award at the Hong Kong Film Awards next month, Tony said, “After tonight, that’s it. As an actor, you don’t need to think too much. Just do your best in the next role. You can’t control other things.”
“I didn’t think about winning an award because I didn’t feel like I was the lead in the film. Everyone nominated me, and I won. It’s a double win,” he said.
