Amid the trouble brewing between China and Japan, the media focus is back on Tony Leung Chiu Wai, who has finally responded to rumours about his supposed move to Japan.

In an interactive session at the Singapore International Film Festival to promote “Silent Friend,” the actor was asked by a Chinese outlet about him supposedly settling in Japan, after netizens spotted him in various locations in the country, especially in its skiing resort area Niseko in Hokkaido.

Denying that he had moved there, Tony explained that he would occasionally return to Japan as he enjoys solitude.

He also revealed that he has gone skiing there almost every year for over 20 years, but deliberately avoids learning the Japanese language, only mastering the most basic everyday phrases.

Tony humorously explained, “If you don’t know the language, you can only say a sentence or two at most and that’s it,” adding that the language barrier helped him avoid speaking to people, being socially anxious that he is.

In a previous video he shared on Douyin, the actor explained that he spends his free time skiing in Japan for the past decades, and would be accompanied by wife Carina Lau occasionally.
