91-year-old Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actress Law Lan (Helena Law) recently revealed that she has actually left TVB.
The confirmation came after some netizens noticed that Law Lan had “disappeared” from TVB’s artiste roster, sparking heated discussion and feelings of reluctance among fans. Upon being contacted by the media, she confirmed that she has left the company.
She said TVB did not discuss contract renewal with her, so she left after the contract expired.
Law Lan said that after decades at TVB, perhaps the company no longer needs an elderly woman to act.
“Not every drama needs an elderly character. The company has many artistes. I’m not unhappy. That’s just how it is! For now, I’ll treat it as taking a break,” she said.
The actress added that if there is a suitable role and her health allows it, she’ll still take it.
”As you get older, suitable work becomes less, so the most important thing is staying healthy,” she added.
Law Lan has been acting for over 80 years and has said she has no plans to retire. Her doctor once warned her that if she ever stopped working, her mind would deteriorate, so she insists on performing as long as she’s able to do so.
The veteran actress joined TVB in the 1970s, left once, then later returned. In 2002, she received the “Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement” at TVB’s Anniversary Gala.
