Amid the controversy surrounding him regarding his high school years, actor Cho Jin-woong has announced that he will retire from showbiz.
In an official statement released on the 6th, Cho wrote, “I bow my head in apology for disappointing everyone who trusted and supported me due to my disgraceful past. I humbly accept all criticisms, and as of today, I will suspend all activities and put a full stop to my acting career.”
“I believe this is the rightful responsibility and duty I must bear for my past mistakes. From now on, I will do my best to reflect so that I can stand upright again as a human being,” he added.
Although he admitted to some of the allegations of his past wrongdoings, Cho vehemently denied involvement in any sexual assault as previously alleged.
Earlier, allegations surfaced regarding Cho, including that he had been sent to a juvenile detention centre for charges including car theft and sexual assault during his high school years and that he had a record of drunk driving.
The day before, his agency, Saram Entertainment, stated, “Upon checking with the actor, it is true that he committed wrongful acts during his underage years. However, these are based on only partially confirmed facts, and since more than 30 years have passed, it is difficult to fully verify the circumstances. The related legal procedures have already concluded, so there are limitations.”
