Maya Imamori has withdrawn from TV Asahi’s “No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger” following reports of underage drinking.
The departure news of the actress, who plays Sumino Ichikawa/Gozyu Unicorn in the show, was confirmed by TV Asahi, stating that they have begun editing out her appearance from the episode airing 9 November.
19-year-old Maya herself has apologised on Instagram, writing, “As a minor, drinking alcohol was an extremely shameful act both as a member of society and as a human being. No matter the reason, it is inexcusable. I deeply regret my actions and am reflecting on them.”
This marks an unprecedented incident in the history of the Super Sentai series, where a main cast member is removed due to a scandal.
Maya had already been the subject of a September report by Weekly Bunshun, which alleged an affair with Asai Kosuke, an actor from the show. While that particular rumour remains unclear, the combination of the two controversies seems to have led to her immediate dismissal from her management agency, Seju.
However, many speculated that Maya will also face subsequent consequences for her departure and misdeed involving merchandising of her character in the show.
