It was revealed that Khalil Fong’s personal music label “FU MUSIC” and his estate management have issued a joint statement declaring “all rights reserved” in response to the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
As reported on Mingpao, on 7 October, the late singer’s camp stated that they are strictly prohibiting the use Khalil Fong’s past, present, and future works for AI training and related development without authorisation, in order to protect Khalil’s musical legacy.
The statement states that the prohibition covers Khalil’s sound recordings, songwriting, and audiovisual recordings, as well as his name, likeness, image, text, data, and metadata.
The statement specifically cites EU directives and the Hong Kong Copyright Ordinance, explicitly stating that all rights are reserved to the fullest extent of the law.
Khalil’s estate and FU Music emphasise that this right reservation applies to existing and future works, including those already publicly available. Third parties wishing to use Khalil’s works for AI-related purposes must contact the estate via email in advance to obtain explicit authorisation, and the estate reserves the right to determine whether authorisation is granted and the terms and conditions.
Khalil passed away on 21 February this year. He was 41.
