Peter Chan has recently been named Best Director by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society for his latest directorial effort, the sports film “Leap”.

As reported on Mingpao, the director, who accepted his award from the association, stated that he was mentally unprepared when presented with the accolade, stating that the feeling was similar when he received the same honour 18 years ago for “Three”.

“I am very grateful to all the Hong Kong film critics right now,” he added.

“Leap” is a sports drama based on China’s national women volleyball team. The film’s star and lead Gong Li, who plays the legendary star player turned coach Lang Ping, won the Best Actress award.

Peter also accepted the Best Actress award on behalf Gong Li, saying that he is thankful that the award-winning actress agreed to be in the film.

“She asked me to thank all the HK Film Critics Society when she made a long-distance call earlier, no matter if they voted for her or not, as well as the moviegoers in Hong Kong for supporting the movie,” he added.

The Best Film was awarded to “Inside the Red Brick Wall”, while no actor was named Best Actor this year. The reason was because of the lack of narrative film releases in 2020 due to the ongoing pandemic.
