Did you know that the origin of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s stage name comes from a comedy catchphrase?
That’s what the singer revealed recently during her appearance on the show, “Pokapoka,” where she was asked how she came up with the unique name. She stated that the name Kyary actually originated from her own real name Kiriko.
As to how “Pamyu Pamyu” was integrated into the stage name, she said, “I’ve been appearing in various street style photos as an amateur model since I was in high school, and when I wrote my name, I thought that if I just wrote ‘Kyary,’ it could be Mariah Carey, or the movie ‘Carrie,’ or many others.”
“When I was in elementary school, Yagi from the comedy duo Savanna did a gag on TV using the catchphrase ‘Pamyu!’ and I suddenly remembered it. I didn’t intend to be active for this long, so I just casually wrote ‘Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’ and that’s how it all started,” she revealed.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu made her major debut in 2011 with the mini-album “Moshi Moshi Harajuku.” In March 2023, she announced her marriage to actor Shono Hayama. In October 2024, she announced the birth of her first child.
