Huang Xiaoming has finally addressed one of the most viral rumours about him last year – his supposed billion-yuan debt.

On 21 February, the actor addressed the issue for the first time on a variety show. He spoke about the rumour that he lost RMB 1.03 billion gambling in Macau. He said that it was utterly absurd, thanks to the amplification of AI technology.

“Nowadays, AI-generated news stories are often half true and half false, and may even deliberately allude to specific individuals. Although they sound fake, they spread extremely quickly, and that incident really hurt me a lot,” he said.

The rumour circulated in March last year, dragging a few names into the mix, including Jay Chou, who denied it immediately, saying he was never in Macau and had been busy working on his music in Australia.

The heat then turned to Huang Xiaoming, with some netizens even leaving provocative comments on his Weibo about it.
