Gigi Leung recently expressed sadness that her Hong Kong rendition of “Captain Tsubasa,” which was originally performed by Dicky Cheung, could not be used to promote her new movie, “Pass and Goal”.

The actress, who attended the press conference of the new movie, said that although the recording was completed, the Japanese side ultimately refused to grant the rights because they felt the lyrics differed from the original meaning, preventing the song’s release.

Gigi, who said that she loved the Dicky Cheung version, said she would respect the Japanese side’s decision and hoped the song would have a chance to be released in the future.

“For now, I can only listen it at home,” she added.

Regarding netizens questioning why they couldn’t obtain the rights for this film despite Dicky Cheung having been able to sing the song for many years, Gigi said she also found it strange but still chose to respect all decisions.

“That’s life; sometimes even with all the preparation, it might not come true,” she added.

The original theme song of the 1983 football-related anime, titled “Moeto Hero” was performed by Hiroyuki Okita and written by Osamu Yoshioka. Dicky later rerecorded the Hong Kong version, which Gigi described as “more passionate”.
