South Korean entertainer Koo Jun-yup, aka DJ Koo, has recently unveiled the memorial statue of his darling wife Barbie Hsu, a year after her untimely passing.

On 2 February, DJ Koo, his mother-in-law Huang Chun-mei and sister-in-law Dee Hsu were photographed attending the ceremony. He can be seen holding a black umbrella in one hand in the drizzle, as he tightly held Barbie’s mother’s hand with the other, the two walking slowly and sorrowfully to the cemetery area.

Aside from the Hsu family, others that were seen with them at the Chin Pao San Cemetery were Chrstine Fan and Blackie Chen, Kevin Tsai and Pace Wu. Show Lo, Rainie Yang, Janet Chia, Valen Hsu, Chiu Li-Kuan, Jerry Yan, and Vic Chou also arrived at the scene one after another soon after.

The statue of Barbie was designed by Koo himself, and features a marble base, with the route from the park to the statue adorned with nine white cement steps that wind upwards in an S-shape. Behind the statue is a nine-section white cement wall, also in an S-shape.

The Barbie Hsu statue has her hands folded in front of her chest, her eyes slightly closed, her expression peaceful and with a faint smile. The statue’s head is tied with a “bow” symbolising Barbie’s girlish heart, and her pleated long dress seems to be swaying gently in the wind in the rain.

The design is full of S and 9 elements. S symbolises Barbie, and the Korean pronunciation of 9 is the same as Koo Jun-yeop’s surname “Koo,” both pronounced “gu,” symbolising Koo Jun-yeop’s unwavering love.
