Short-form drama actor He Congrui found himself having to apologise for a joke gone wrong that he made during a livestream promoting his short series.

On 19 January, the actor decided to start livestreaming to promote his new project and answered questions from fans. When some users complained about the drama’s midnight release, He responded that the airing time is not something he has a control of.

He then jokingly called himself an insignificant male lead with insignificant screen time, and lightheartedly suggested that any issue with his female-oriented drama, “Four Sisters in the 80s,” lies with the female leads.

The incident trended on social media, with many criticising his attempt to shift blame to his female co-stars. Some argued that in the Chinese entertainment industry, it’s common for male leads to completely absolve themselves of responsibilities and blame the female lead, which easily triggers backlash from fans.

Following the criticism, on 20 January, the actor released a statement, saying, “I am very sorry that my inappropriate remarks have caused public controversy. After reading everyone’s comments, I would like to make the following sincere response and apologise to the individuals mentioned.”

“First of all, during my live stream, I made an inappropriate joke about why the show was released at midnight, which offended the two leading actresses and the hardworking crew. I feel very guilty about this and have apologised to everyone involved, both privately and online. The production of a show is inseparable from the efforts of every actor and crew member, and I have always respected every member of the crew. Every show is a work of everyone’s efforts.

“Secondly, I have the highest expectations for the outcome of each project, and I will accept whatever the result may be, then carefully review it and start again. Each project is a work that embodies everyone’s hard work, so from any perspective, I should not say that I am just a supporting male lead. I am very sorry for this, as it was my inappropriate wording.”

“Finally, I would like to apologise to all the viewers who have always cared for and loved me, as well as to the female lead teacher who was most affected. In the future, I will pay more attention to my words and actions, and earnestly accept everyone’s criticism and corrections. Thank you all for your concern, and I sincerely apologise to everyone.”
