Lee Seung Gi has shocked everyone when he just recently released an official statement announcing that he and his wife, Lee Da In, have made the difficult decision to sever ties with her family following a series of legal troubles that her father, Lee Hong Heon, is involved in.
In his statement released on 29 April, the actor expressed his devastation upon learning that his father-in-law had been indicted again on charges related to stock manipulation of a renewable energy company called Quantapia.
Lee Hong Heon was previously under investigation for allegedly making substantial illicit gains by manipulating stock prices of a company called COREBEAT in 2016. He was initially sentenced to four years in prison and fined 2.5 billion won (approximately USD 1.7 million) in 2018, though he was later acquitted on appeal. However, in 2023, the Supreme Court overturned this acquittal and sent the case back for retrial, where he was ultimately fined.
“Although my father-in-law was previously sentenced to a fine in the retrial regarding the ongoing allegations of illegal activities, he has recently been indicted again by investigative authorities for similar unlawful acts,” Lee Seung Gi stated.
The actor also apologised for the statements which he made in 2024 where he had called allegations against his father-in-law “clearly false.” He admitted that he had then spoken without fully verifying the facts. “I firmly believe that any illegal acts must be met with appropriate punishment, and I sincerely apologise to the victims who may have suffered due to my hasty judgment,” he continued.
Lee Seung Gi married his wife Lee Da In in April 2023. She is the daughter of actress Kyeon Mi Ri, who was reportedly a major shareholder in the COREBEAT company.
“This incident has irreparably damaged the trust within our family, and after much deliberation, my wife and I have decided to sever ties with her family,” the actor explained in his heartfelt statement.
