Julian Cheung suddenly surprised many by sharing a statement from his lawyer regarding a misuse of his portrait by a gaming company.
On 10 February, he posted the statement on Instagram, stating that an online gaming site called BX99 has used his name and portrait without authorisation, causing a misunderstanding with the public that Julian has an endorsement agreement with the company when there is none.
“In order to protect the public’s right to know and safeguard Mr. Cheung’s legitimate rights and interests, the company solemnly declares as follows: 1. Mr. Cheung has not authorised “BX99” to use his portrait and name, and there is no advertising endorsement or other partnership between Mr. Cheung and the brand, game and website.”
“2. Any unauthorised person or company using Mr. Cheung’s portrait and name and using it for fake commercial propaganda seriously infringes on Mr. Cheung’s legitimate rights and interests. In response to the relevant illegal acts, the company has commissioned lawyers to collect evidence and advise the relevant networks to immediately stop the illegal acts; when necessary, the company will assist Mr. Cheung Chi Lam to take legal measures including litigation to safeguard his legitimate rights and interests.”
“3. The company thanks the general public for their long-term support and trust in Mr. Cheung, and at the same time, we urge consumers and the public to pay attention to identification and judgement carefully.”
