“Squid Game” director Hwang Dong-hyuk continues to sing praises for the show’s new addition, T.O.P, who plays a disgraced rapper in the second season of the hit Netflix show.

The showrunner, who spoke to People recently, stated that T.O.P (real name Choi Seung-hyun) is very brave to say yes to making a comeback with a character who is also a rapper like him, and one that is on drugs.

The director added that the actor was courageous to take on the role

“As you may know, the actor Seung-hyun, about nine years ago got involved in a marijuana scandal in Korea and wasn’t able to do any projects for the past nine years in Korea,” he said. “I feel that it took him a lot of guts, in a way, to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too.”

“So I think it took him a lot of courage to take on that role,” he added.

In the new season, T.O.P plays the villainous role of Player 230 aka Thanos, a disgraced rapper who quickly resorts to shady tactics in order to win the game.

As for his performance, Hwang said, “Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character.”
