The reigning Miss Universe Philippines Celeste Cortesi recently revealed that it was Pia Wurtzbach who inspired her to join the beauty pageant in the first place.
Said the Filipina-Italian beauty, she was still living in Italy with her family when Pia won Miss Universe in 2015, the first for Philippines after more than 40 years since Margie Moran.
“I remember my mum was going crazy because the Philippines won, Pia Wurtzbach won. She came in my room with this photo of Pia Wurtzbach,” she said, adding that she was only 18 at the time. “I was just so amazed of the overall performance of Pia, and she really inspired me in joining beauty pageants.”
Celeste added that she still considers Pia her “ultimate favourite” beauty queen.
“I actually said for the first time [at that time], I [want to] go to the Philippines and represent the Philippines in Miss Universe. But it was just like a random thought, and then look at me now, I am doing it,” she said.
Celeste will be competing for the Philippines at the Miss Universe pageant, which will be held in December.
