Yang Mi recently revealed that she had a minor burn from using a steam eye mask, which has now left noticeable red marks around her eyes.

The actress shared about her mishap in a social media post, revealing the minor injury she had and jokingly wrote in the caption, “The steam eye mask bit me.”

Yang Mi’s studio responded soon after that her wounds have received professional treatment and that the burns have not affected the filming of her new drama or subsequent commercial activities.

Zhang Xinyu has also shared her experience of getting low-temperature burns from using a steam eye mask during filming, which is said to have been caused by filming in a very cold environment and then using the steam eye mask afterwards.

“I have also been burned before. This is a low-temperature burn, so please be careful,” she said.

It is noted that Yang Mi is currently filming her new drama, “The Reign of Northern Wei”.

After a slew of flopped movies, Yang Mi can now breathe a sigh of relief that her latest film, “The Litchi Road” is doing very well at the box office.

It was reported that the movie, which garnered a 7.7 on the Douban score when it was released in China on 18 July, has now exceeded RMB 100 million at the box office, with Yang Mi’s character attracting viewers’ attention.

Based on the historical novel written by Ma Boyong, Yang Mi plays the role of Zheng Yuting, the wife of Li Shande (Dapeng), a minor official in the Tang Dynasty who is accidentally assigned to be the lychee envoy for the birthday of Concubine Yang.

Her performance as Zheng Yuting was also praised by the likes of producer Yu Zheng, who said, “Yang Mi is really amazing. She has grown up and has no trace of any of her past roles. She acted so well.”

The former TV ratings queen has moved on to movies in the past few years. However, her recent films and dramas like “Nothing Can’t Be Undone by a Hotpot” and “In the Name of the Brother” did not do well with the audience.

Yang Mi will be seen next in “She’s Got No Name”.

Zhang Ziyi and Yang Mi recently found themselves having to clarify their “cake moment”, following accusations made by Zanilia Zhao’s fans that the two were excluding their co-star (Zanilia) in their friendship.

The whole issue sparked last week, when Yang Mi posted a photo of a cake on social media, which was decorated with corn and wheat kernels. Zhang Ziyi immediately took to the comments and posted, “Cake! Reminds me of our cake. Let’s have a cake gathering in Shanghai!” to which Yang Mi responded, “Absolutely!”

The casual exchange had netizens noting that the two seemed to be good friends with one another, but somehow Zanilia was not added to the conversation, despite being one of the three important female stars in the same movie.

At the film’s Shanghai International Film Festival premiere, Zhang Ziyi and Yang Mi explained the “Shanghai Cake Gathering” in detail, saying that the idea came from their characters in the film, Zhan Zhou (Zhang Ziyi) and Wang Xumei (Yang Mi), who share a deep mutual appreciation. In the story, she said, Wang Xumei gives Zhan Zhou a taste of something “sweet”.

“This reflects the two women supporting each other during their most difficult moments,” said Yang Mi, adding that the comment about a “cake gathering” was purely a promotional move and that they had no intention of excluding anyone.

As for Zanilia’s absence from the festival, it was revealed that the actress had gone to New York to attend the Tribeca Film Festival where her movie, “What a Wonderful World” was screened.

As netizens began to change their perception regarding Yang Mi’s parenting, the actress recently admitted that she does not consider herself the perfect mother.

In a recent interview with Chinese media, the actress shared that people have different definition of what a perfect mother is, and that she would never be perfect in the eyes of others.

“There are thousands of ways to be perfect in the eyes of a thousand people. We certainly can’t be perfect in the eyes of others, so I think it doesn’t take courage to admit that you are not perfect. It is a normal thing. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself,” she said, adding that one should try to be a good mother rather than a perfect one.

Yang Mi also said that when it comes to educating her daughter Noemie, she hopes that she can respect her daughter’s wishes instead of controlling her. She revealed that her daughter loves painting and they would often paint together.

“Everyone is their own person. A mum who continues to grow, stays true to herself, and brings positive vibes, that is the most precious gift she can give her child,” she said.

It was earlier this month that good friend Evonne Sie denied the notion that the actress was a negligent mother, saying that the actress would often talk about her daughter to her friends.

Two years after the first announcement, Peter Chan’s “She’s Got No Name” finally unveiled the first official poster for the first part of the movie.

The poster reveals the looks of all the cast for the first time, sparking interests of fans who mostly commented that all of the actors seemed unrecognisable and are truly immersed in their characters.

This includes lead actress Zhang Ziyi, whose character has scars covering her face; Yang Mi looking dishevelled in her character as a female prisoner, Jackson Yee in shades and equipped with a cane as a blind fortune teller, as well as Zanilia Zhao, looking glamorous as a writer.

Fans also couldn’t help but notice that both Zanilia and Yang Mi are placed on each side of the poster. The decision seemed to be a way to avoid the fandom of both actresses from arguing on who is the bigger star.

Since the film debuted in the non-competitive section of the Cannes Film Festival last year, there has been no further news until it was recently announced as the opening film of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival. What is noteworthy is that the film has recently been announced to be divided into two parts, the first of which has the Chinese title of “Jiangyuan Lane: Mystery”.

While netizens have been introduced to the idea that Yang Mi was an absent mother for many years now, good friend Evonne Sie has recently dismissed the notion in an interview.

The Taiwanese actress recently shared about her friendship with the Chinese star during an appearance on a variety show, saying that Yang Mi would often share photos of her only daughter Noemie with her in private.

Evonne stated that she never understood the act of showing off one’s baby to others, though she truly adored Noemie’s cuteness. But it was only after she became a mother herself that she gradually turned into a “baby-showing maniac”.

She also stated that the two of them, who became friends after working together on “Tiny Times” in 2013, had a lot of discussions about parenting whenever they meet and that Yang Mi would often visit Noemie in Hong Kong discreetly so not to attract attention.

It is noted that the idea of Yang Mi ignoring her daughter was due to the fact that she rarely posted photos of her child. Many also speculated that she was too busy with work to spend time with her daughter, who lives with her ex-husband Hawick Lau in Hong Kong.

This was further fuelled by her former father-in-law Lau Dan, who declined to comment on anything related to the actress’ visit.

Yang Mi once said in an interview that she would visit her daughter whenever she was free, but she did not want to disclose the time, nor did she want to expose any of her daughter’s private life. This is so that Noemie can have an ordinary life.

Yang Mi’s star power faced significant challenges in 2024, with the acclaimed actress being named Most Disappointing Actor of the Year by the Douban TV Group Year-end Awards.

The actress’ highly anticipated drama “Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red-Moon Pact” failed to meet expectations, with viewers criticising the plot’s inconsistencies despite her pairing with popular actor Gong Jun. The series was ultimately designated as Flop Drama of the Year.

Zhang Ruoyun’s “Joy of Life 2” dominated the awards, securing both Best Drama and Most Watched Drama of the Year. The sequel to the 2019 drama, which also starred Li Qin, brought additional acclaim to Zhang, who claimed Role of the Year and Actor of the Year for his portrayal of Fan Xian.

In a notable career resurgence, Wu Jinyan’s performance in “The Double” emerged as the Dark Horse of the Year. Her character, Xue Fangfei, captured audiences’ attention, earning a place among the top 10 Most Popular Female Characters and marking a successful comeback following previous underwhelming projects.

The setbacks for Yang Mi extended beyond television, as her other ventures in 2024 struggled to find success. Her drama “In the Name of the Brother” failed to make an impact, while her film “Nothing Can’t Be Solved by a Hot Pot” performed poorly at the box office, solidifying a challenging year for the Chinese actress.

Despite rumours of a rivalry between them, Yang Mi recently proves she is nothing but supportive of Zanilia Zhao by booking a whole cinema hall to watch Zanilia’s new movie.

As reported on Epoch Times, netizens recently claimed that they saw that the actress has booked a theatre in support of Zanilia’s movie, “The Unseen Sister”, which the latter stars with actress Xin Zhilei.

While some netizens doubt the validity of the report, Yang Mi herself took to Weibo to confirm this, revealing that she had made the booking for the film as well as the Andy Lau film, “Cesium Fallout”.

She wrote, “Thank you to so many ‘Yang Mi’ for booking the theatre for me. It is not an easy process for a film to go from project establishment to release. I wish “Qiao Yan’s Heart” and “Burning City” will be big hits. A good market requires the efforts of filmmakers and audiences.”

It is noted that Yang Mi and Zanilia have been pitted against each other ever since they expanded their careers to the big screen. It was further heightened by the fact that both actresses have been cast in Peter Chan’s Zhang Ziyi-starrer, “She’s Got No Name”, prompting the two fandoms to fight to see which of the two actresses will get more screentime.

After it was withdrawn from theatres across China after only a few days of release, it was revealed that the Yang Mi-starrer, “Nothing Can’t Be Undone by a Hotpot” will now go straight to streaming.

The news was announced by the official Weibo account of the movie, saying that the movie will be streamed on Youku soon.

“Hotpot Bureau, reunite!” it added in its caption.

The news drew ire among fans of Yang Mi, who thought that the film was only withdrawn so it would be released at a later date like most films that experienced slow number of audiences during its release.

One posted, “Would it kill you to wait for the movie to be released normally before selling it to a streaming platform?”

“Wasn’t it a withdrawal? It’s not going to be rescheduled? It’s going to be aired online instead? It hasn’t even warmed up [in theatres]?” another asked.

Meanwhile, others are speculating that the producers are not convinced that the movie would do well in theatres if it is to be re-released, prompting it to be sold to a streamer instead.

Even though her movie did not do well at the box office, Yang Mi recently received praises from her “Nothing Can’t Be Undone by a Hotpot” director Ding Sheng for sacrificing her long black locks to play a redhead.

As reported on Sina News, the actress, who plays a mysterious woman in the movie, was asked by the director to have a “particularly strong red hair” to create a sharp contrast between the character’s before and after images.

Yang said that she found it quite interesting herself, but that the process itself was quite difficult. As her hair is jet black, the actress had to have her hair bleached white first before they went on to dye her hair red.

The whole process took seven and a half hours.

She also had to re-dye her hair every three days throughout the filming period, which the actress admitted that it had damaged her hair.

However, despite the sacrifice to her hair, when asked how she felt about the whole process, she responded simply, “I dyed my hair red just to make the character look like she is not that easy to bully.”
