Westlife back in Malaysia to perform at sold out 2-day show

TheHIVE.Asia — Fri, 09 Aug 2019 01:22:00 +0000

It was a fun trip down memory lane for 7,000 Westlife fans in Malaysia yesterday evening, as the Irish quartet took the stage for their first concert in the country in nearly two decades.

Singing both their old hits as well as songs off their upcoming album, the band performed a total of 17 songs – including medleys – at their sold-out first night show, which opened with the 2019 track “Hello My Love”.

Donning a dark uniformed look, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Kian Egan sang 5 songs in their first set, including “Swear It Again”, “What About Now”, “My Love” and “When You’re Looking Like That”.

After a short video intermission, the quartet reappeared on stage in their next change of outfit, themed red and black, to perform their second set of songs, the upbeat “Uptown Girl” and the more emotional “If I Let You Go”. They closed the set with their new song, “Better Man”, that was released earlier this year.

During his talk with the crowd, Nicky asked anyone with information to please
assist the police in their search for Nora Quoirin, a 15-year-old Irish girl
who went missing while holidaying in Malaysia recently.

While most singers would take a group photo with the crowd of fans towards the end of the concert, Westlife flipped the order as Mark initiated it after the performance of “Uptown Girl”. They made everyone wave for the video (“to show everyone back home” they said) – and fans, of course, were more than happy to oblige – before taking a photo with the crowd.

After changing into more rocking outfits, think black leather and skintight jeans, the band performed a medley of Queen songs, consisting of short versions of “Another One Bites the Dust”, “Radio Ga Ga”, “I Want to Break Free”, “Somebody to Love” and “Don’t Stop Me Now”, and slightly longer versions of “We Will Rock You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” before ending it on a high note with the whole stadium singing along to “We Are the Champions”.

They were not done with their medleys, however, as they sat down to perform short acoustic versions of some of their songs. They even gauged the popularity of their songs by making fans sing out loud to some of them, like “Bop Bop Baby” and “Seasons in the Sun”, making fans laugh with their honest thoughts whenever the crowd started to falter while singing. “They don’t really like this one,” they would joke.

It wasn’t just Westlife who was singing at the concert as fans
knew almost all songs by heart and easily sang along loudly.

After performing “I Have a Dream”, “Unbreakable” and “Fool Again”, Nicky suddenly asked everyone in the crowd to put away their phones. As is the norm, almost everyone had their phones up the entire time recording their performances, and he wanted none of that during their next song, “Queen of My Heart”.

“I see some rulebreakers,” he pointed out some offenders in the crowd before starting the song and continued to tell more ‘rulebreakers’ to put down their phones even while singing. He cheekily substituted a part of the song’s lyrics to “We both don’t have our phones…” as he sang, making his bandmates guffaw.

“I enjoyed our moment, no phones, just us and the fans,” he later said after the song ended.

The band continued on with their dynamic performance of “Dynamite”, the third single off their upcoming 11th album, “Spectrum”.

7,000-strong fans cheering for Westlife.

Kian introduced their final song, “You Raise Me Up”, saying that the song has come to be a song of hope for them as they sung it at his father’s funeral and, a few months later, at Nicky’s father’s funeral.

The band bade their fans goodbye after the song, disappearing off stage while waving happily and smiling wide at the screaming crowd.

As shouts of encore and loud screams from fans alternated, yelling for the band to appear for more songs, they happily obliged. The quartet took the stage once again – this time clad in all-white, a complete contrast to their opening look – to sing their real final two songs of the night, “Flying Without Wings” and “World of Our Own”.

Judging by the opening night of their sold out 2-day show, the remaining 7,000 fans that will be attending the concert tonight are in for an equally fun, if not better, time.

Shane brings back the nostalgia with Westlife hits at lakeside concert

TheHIVE.Asia — Sun, 20 Jan 2019 18:16:00 +0000

While Malaysian fans patiently wait (a long, nearly-two-decades wait now) for Westlife to return to the country for a full concert, they were at least able to enjoy some of the boyband’s older hits again when member Shane Filan performed at the Elmina Lakeside Concert last weekend.

As he’s been to the country various times before, the singer comfortably greeted his thrilled fans and even got them to sing along during his performance.

He started it off with “Uptown Girl”, a song that not only older fans but even newer fans sang along to enthusiastically, followed by “My Love” and “Heaven” before singing his own solo song, “Beautiful in White” off his 2017 “Love Always” album.

Switching back to nostalgic mode, the singer once again got the crowd singing along to “What About Now”, “Swear It Again”, “If I Let You Go” and, what he called his favourite Westlife song to sing, “You Raise Me Up”.

Westlife fans sang along with Shane Filan as he performed some of his band’s hit songs.

Prior to Shane wrapping up the lakeside concert, violinist Josh Kua first got the 10,000-strong crowd hyped up even more by serenading them with a medley of Westlife hits.

Of course, Shane wasn’t the only performer of the night. As we’ve mentioned before, local singer-actress Fazura was also part of the lineup.

After pop siblings, Pong Pong, opened the show with “Xue Mao Jiao” and “Qiang Xin Zhang”, Fazura took the stage, showing off her multilingual skills as she sang the Malay-language “Sayangi Dirimu”; then “Bisa Apa”, which has an Indonesian touch; “Nothing Like Pag Ibig” with its Filipino touch; the English “Can’t Forget Me”, her latest single which topped iTunes Malaysia within 7 hours of release; and back to Malay with the inspirational “Bangun”.

Fazura, one of the three main acts for the evening.

Fattah Amin and Fazura did a surprise performance
of their yet-to-release duet at the concert.

Her husband, singer-actor Fattah Amin who is also signed under the same record label, made a surprise appearance at the concert. He joked that he didn’t know how he ended up on stage when he was only there to show support for his wife.

Nevertheless, he sung his 2018 single “Isterimewa” and then performed a duet with his wife. Fazura said that it was a very special stage indeed since the song, “Paling Sempurna”, was not even released yet. So the evening’s concertgoers were the first to hear it.

Heating up the stage next was 11-year-old beatboxer Sawyer Leong. This little man didn’t need any words to hype up the crowd, all he needed was the mic in hand to drop some beat and got the crowd clapping along to his beatboxing.

Namewee sang songs he made in various countries
but wrapped it up with a patriotic Malaysian song.

The third act from the main lineups of the night took the stage next. Namewee, a local singer-rapper-director-producer etc., who is controversial and yet entertaining at the same time, demonstrated just how well-traveled he is as he belted out songs he collaborated with other artistes from various parts of Asia.

He kicked off his stage with “Yi Qi Biao Gao Yin” and as the title says, he did have to hit some pretty high notes in this song, effectively showing off his pipes. He followed it up with the Vietnamese “The Rain in Ho Chi Minh”, the Thai “Thai Cha Cha”; and the Japanese “Makudonarudo”.

Before performing his next song, “To the North”, he said that since Chinese-American singer-songwriter Wang Leehom – whom he collaborated with for the track – couldn’t make it that evening (hey, maybe we’ll see these two performing together at Leehom’s upcoming concert in Malaysia), he asked the fans to be his Leehom and help him sing the song, to which everyone complied even though, again, the song had some pretty hard notes to hit.

He wrapped up his stage with the funny but patriotic “Ali, Ah Kao dan Muthu”.

Elmina Lakeside Concert taking a group photo.

The unique concert (the stage was set on an island in the middle of a small lake while the concertgoers watched from across the lake), presented by Sime Darby Property and organised by Universal Music Malaysia, ended with all the performers taking a group photo on stage to commemorate the special evening.
