Fans are breathing a sigh of relief after a video of Qin Lan speaking at a press conference showed that the actress is slowly recovering her voice.

The actress recently made an appearance at a press conference on 4 July, revealing that her short hair has grown slightly longer and that her voice has recovered significantly.

However, there has been no official confirmation that she has fully recovered.

Qin Lan previously spoke about her altered voice, stating that her vocal problems stemmed from her filming “Story of Yanxi Palace” in 2018, when her numerous crying scenes and intense vocal use led to her developing chronic pharyngitis.

After filming another drama in 2020, she was diagnosed with unilateral vocal cord paralysis, and despite four months of rest, the condition was not completely cured. Filming at high altitudes in 2023 further exacerbated her throat problems, making her vocal cord issue more severe. Her unique husky, electronic voice became her trademark, accompanying her on screen for nearly three years and, along with her short hair, earning her the nickname “Electronic Dora”.

Fortunately, after a long period of rest and recuperation, her voice is now smooth and stable, without hoarseness or stuttering, and the quality of her original voice acting has been restored.

Qin Lan recently has a new update on the state of her voice, saying that she had just undergone vocal cord surgery that has now changed her voice from EDM to Wolf Granny.

The actress, who was on the variety show, “The Inn,” revealed that she underwent surgery in hopes of improving her long-standing voice problem. However, the postoperative recovery did not meet expectations and that it has now become hoarser than before.

“It used to sound like a cartoon character, but now it feels like the Big Bad Wolf,” she joked.

Qin Lan’s voice problems can be traced back to 2019 when she filmed “Story of Yanxi Palace,” where a crying scene triggered pharyngitis. In 2020, after starring in “Legacy.” she was diagnosed with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP), and even after four months of rest, the condition was not completely cured.

Although her condition briefly improved in 2025, it has been recurring and she has never fully recovered.

Qin Lan recently admitted that she no longer has her previous rounded melodious voice due to her damaged vocal cord.

In a recent interview on a reality show, the “Story of Yanxi Palace” actress stated that her voice was already slightly damaged when she started filming her drama, “Legacy” in 2022.

“One day, when I arrived on set, the director was surprised by the fact that I didn’t speak. But when I opened my mouth, I couldn’t even speak,” she said.

Qin stated that due to multiple recurrence of chronic pharyngitis, she had to carry an atomizer during filming and even had to take a four-month break after filming.

“Normally the vocal cord open and close in a balanced manner, but mine can’t do that,” she said.

The change in the actress’ voice has also given her a new nickname by netizens, who – coupled with her short hair and big eyes – is now being known as “Electronic Dora”, after Nickalodeon’s cute animated character.

When asked how she felt about her voice, Qin responded, “I feel very depressed and frustrated. Where did my beautiful voice go? I still couldn’t find the root cause of it, but the doctors tell me that it can’t be cured. Isn’t that frustrating?”

Rumour has it that Chinese actress Qin Lan is now dating younger actor Wei Daxun.

As reported on Sohu, some Chinese media broke the news a few days ago, claiming that an actor surnamed W and actress surnamed Q, both from Northeast China, are currently in love.

It further added that W is known to date actresses M and Y in the past, who are also older than him.

Netizens immediately speculated the actor to be Wei, who was previously rumoured to be with Yang Mi and Ma Su before that, while saying that the new squeeze is Qin – of whom he worked with in the drama, “Dr. Tang”.

Many stated that the relationship started since the two began filming the drama, as previously someone claiming to be a staff member of the production stated that the two seemed very chummy with one another while filming a scene at the airport.

Following their dynamics in “Story of Yanxi Palace”, actresses Wu Jinyan and Qin Lan are reuniting in the new mainland costume drama, “Legacy”.

Wu, who played the maid Wei Yingluo to Qin’s Empress Fuca in the previous period drama, will now play sister to the latter in a drama that is set in the early Republic Era.

Aside from the two, another “Story of Yanxi Palace” alumnus, Nie Yuan will also play a role in the new series, again as Qin’s husband.

“Legacy”, set in the late 1920s, revolves around three sisters Yi Zhongling, Yi Zhongyu, and Yi Zhongxiu, who are forced to return to their family’s Shanghai department store business following the Yi family’s only son deciding to abandon the business to pursue medicine.

While the eldest Zhongling is the quiet elegant lady and the youngest Zhongxiu (played by Zhang Nan) is romantic and naïve, Zhongyu is the more shrewd and capable among the three sisters. The sisters battle among themselves for control of the family business. The upcoming series will be released via Youku in China in 2022 and on HBO Go around Asia.
