Squid Game actor Oh Young-Soo has been indicted on charges of sexual misconduct.

The 78-year-old actor was brought to court on Thursday for indecent assault, after he was accused of inappropriately touching a woman’s body in 2017.

“Everything reported by the local media about Oh is actually not wrong,” an official from the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office shared, without giving further details.

Following the news, Seoul’s Ministry of Culture decided to stop the government’s commercial broadcast featuring Oh.

On the other hand, the actor denied the allegations, saying that he held the woman’s hand to show her the way around a lake.

The victim reportedly filed a complaint against the veteran actor in December last year. However, the police closed the case in April this year without filing any charges.  The victim later appealed the case, which had since been investigated by the prosecutors.

In January, Oh became the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Player 001 in the hit Netflix series, “Squid Game”.

It’s a great way to start the year for veteran actor Oh Young-Soo, who recently bagged an accolade at the 79th Golden Globe Awards.

The actor won Best Supporting Actor in the television series category for his role as Player 001 in Netflix’s hit show, “Squid Game”, besting contenders such as Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”), Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), as well as fan favourite, Kieran Culkin (“Succession”).

Releasing a statement via Netflix, Oh stated, “It’s no longer “us within the world”, but “the world within us”… I wish you all a beautiful life.”

It is noted that his co-star and lead actor Lee Jung-Jae was also nominated in the Best Actor in a Television Series category, but lost the title to “Succession” star, Jeremy Strong. Meanwhile, “Squid Game” lost the Best Television Series drama category to HBO’s “Succession”. 

Oh and Lee, as well as other cast members and director of “Squid Game” did not attend the ceremony. The award winners were announced in a low-key fashion following boycott against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) over the corruption and racism scandal.

Veteran actor Oh Young-Soo recently admitted that he is being extra cautious following the success of his Netflix series, “Squid Game”.

In an interview on MBC’s “How Do You Play”, the 76 year-old actor, who made news earlier for rejecting an offer to be a spokesperson for a chicken restaurant, stated that he is trying his best to have some self-control and not to be easily influenced by his sudden popularity.

“Everyday life has also changed. Even if I went to a cafe or anywhere, I became conscious of it. It made me think that being famous is challenging,” he said.

Oh admitted that the chicken brand was not the only business that has contacted him, and that there has been a lot of calls lately.

“I don’t have a manager, so it has been hard for me to handle all the calls. My daughter has been helping me with it,” he said.

The actor also added that he doesn’t have any big ambitions at his age, but would rather let things be as it is.

“Simply put, if you go to a mountain and see a flower, a young person would pick it and take it for ourself. But at my age, you leave it there exactly as it is and you will go back to see it again later. It’s the same with life. Leave things as they are. It isn’t easy,” he said.

Unless you have been living under a rock or in a cave these past few weeks, you’d known that South Korean Netflix series “Squid Game” has literally taken over the world since its worldwide release on 17 September 2021. The megahit has propelled its stars to international stardom and even though creator and director Hwang Dong-Hyuk had initially said that he had no immediate plans to helm a sequel, he had since has a change of heart.

While we wait for Season 2, let’s see what happened behind the scenes when the cameras weren’t rolling, and some trivia about the stars and show.

Although his role as Player 001 was a very prominent one in the hit Netflix series, “Squid Game”, veteran actor Oh Young-Soo seemed to have not been fazed by the sudden popularity at all.

It was recently revealed that netizens have actually been calling for a famous chicken place in South Korea called Kkanbu to make the 76 year-old their new spokesperson, due to Oh’s character being “kkanbu”, or ally, to Lee Jung-Jae’s Seong Gi-Hun in the series.

However, the said brand revealed that they have already done so and that Oh has rejected the offer.

“We have voiced our intention to do an advertisement with him, but he said that as an actor, he wanted to stick to his job,” they said.

It is noted that despite his role in the series, Oh has not appeared in many interviews or programmes since the series blew up, with his only upcoming appearance being Yoo Jae-Suk’s variety show, “How Do You Play”.
