Malaysian singer-songwriter Namewee has come under fire from Taiwanese model Sprite Fang following his recent social media post seeking part-time work.

The 42-year-old model, who was a close friend of the late Iris Hsieh, took to Facebook on Wednesday to express her disappointment with Namewee’s actions while the investigation into Iris’ death is still ongoing.

“You don’t have money, but at least you still have your life. You can keep writing music to generate income. However, Iris had money but is no longer alive to spend it,” Sprite wrote.

She also called on Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, to take responsibility and show greater sincerity in the matter. “Can you pay your respects to Iris with the utmost sincerity? Death itself isn’t frightening. What’s most frightening is being forgotten by everyone,” she lamented.

The criticism comes just two days after Namewee posted on social media that he was looking for work, revealing that all his jobs have been cancelled through to the end of 2026 following his connection with Iris’ death.

The rapper had also mentioned that he was seeking sponsors for his Chinese New Year song after the previous sponsor pulled out.

As reported earlier, Namewee was released on bail on 12 November after Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd. Dusuki Mokhtar stated that there was no evidence linking him to Iris’ death. However, investigations are still ongoing.

In a statement following his release, Namewee said that he had done everything he could to save Iris but to no avail.

Having been released on bail following the investigation into Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh’s death, Namewee recently returned to social media to reveal that he is currently out of work and in need to make money.

On 17 November, the singer-songwriter posted, “As the case is still on trial and the report hasn’t come out, it will be months to wait for results. The job that would have been full has been cancelled until the end of next year…”

“If you have behind-the-scenes work, you can hire me. My rates are negotiable. I can also do part-time work. I can fry chicken cutlets, make fried rice, cook curry, wash wok, and install iron grilles. If there is something I don’t know, I can learn it. As long as there is an income,” he wrote.

Namewee also said that he has already written a Chinese New Year song for the Year of the Horse, but that the sponsor has now backed out.

“If you are interested in sponsoring, you can contact us. It comes with a bonus advertising jingle. Guaranteed no vulgarity or inappropriate content. It is better than every new year song in the past. If the MV click-through rate is less than 10M, we will refund half. If anything happens before CNY, we will refund in full.”

He also shared his contact details for the people who are interested.

There is no evidence linking singer-songwriter Namewee to the death of Taiwanese social media influencer, Iris Hsieh.

The statement was recently made by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd. Dusuki Mokhtar, who said that Namewee, real name Wee Meng Chee, will be released on bail.

However, Dusuki stated that the investigation into the case is still ongoing.

“Instructions for further investigation have been issued to the Royal Malaysian Police,” he said.

Prior to this, Namewee was remanded for six days to assist in the investigation into the case. He surrendered himself at the Dang Wangi Police Headquarter back on 5 November.

The police previously reclassified the death of Iris as murder after initially classifying it as sudden death. Namewee was revealed to be the last person seen with her in a hotel room on 22 October.

Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Namewee will remain in police custody for another three days following an extension of his remand order as investigations continue into the death of Taiwanese social media influencer Iris Hsieh.

The Dang Wangi police confirmed on Monday that the 42-year-old’s remand has been extended until 13 November, after the initial six-day remand order expired.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, reported to the authorities on 5 November after the case involving Iris Hsieh’s death was reclassified from sudden death to murder. He was the last person seen with the 31-year-old influencer at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on 22 October, where her body was found in a bathtub.

According to his lawyer Joshua Tay, the controversial entertainer – known for his provocative lyrics and satirical commentary on Malaysian politics and culture – is cooperating fully with the investigation and is in good health. Toxicology and autopsy results are expected to take up to three months.

In a separate matter, Namewee has been charged with drug possession and consumption after authorities allegedly discovered some pills that are suspected to be ecstasy pills during their hotel room search. The rapper had been tested positive for substances that include amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC, and has pleaded not guilty. He posted RM8,000 bail, with the case scheduled for mention on 18 December.

Iris Hsieh was reportedly in Malaysia to work on content with Namewee prior to her passing.

Anthony Wong recently admitted that he was shocked over news of Namewee’s involvement in the death of Taiwanese influencer, Iris Hsieh.

The actor, who attended the premiere of the new movie, “Deadline”, was asked about the scandal surrounding the Malaysian singer-songwriter, whom he worked with on the music video, “Chinese Reggaeton”.

Saying that his understanding of the matter was similar to what everyone else knows, Anthony expressed, “This is a very unfortunate and very serious matter, so it’s not appropriate to speculate. Besides, the matter is already under investigation.”

He also added that the news reports he reads every day are constantly changing, and some are even contradictory, which he finds “shocking and terrifying.”

When asked if he had contacted Namewee, Anthony said, “He wrote a song before and asked me what I thought of it. I thought he wanted my comments, so I said, ‘You wrote it so badly,’ and then he ignored me.”

He also mentioned that there was one more work-related contact after that, but they haven’t been in touch since.

Kenny Bee and Eric Tsang are not very subtle when it comes to freeing themselves from the wrath of mainland netizens, as they swiftly apologise for taking photos with controversial performer Namewee.

The singer and the producer, who were spotted in a photo shared by Namewee after he met them prior to their Malaysian “Wow! Super! Happy 30 Years” concert at Resorts World Genting on 19 July, released their individual statements, with Kenny saying that he was not aware of Namewee’s controversies.

Stating that the photo was just purely a courtesy interaction, he added, “If I had known his position earlier, there would have never been any contact.”

He then took a photo holding the statement to show his sincerity and clear position, and signed his name in the blank space of the statement to show that he agreed with the content.

Eric Tsang also echoed similar sentiment on Weibo, saying, “If I had known about the relevant situation in advance, I would never have had any contact. This incident was purely an unintentional mistake, and in no way does it mean that I have any support or agreement with that person’s views. Once again, I express my deepest apologies to everyone.”

It is noted that Namewee has been banned in China after releasing a song called “Fragile”, which went viral in 2021. The song satirises the social issues in China, the political status of Taiwan, as well as many other issues.

Namewee is unfazed over the backlash he received from some over his pre-death obituary and farewell ceremony that he organised on 1 April, Oriental Daily reported.

Addressing the issue on social media recently, the singer shared the intention behind his actions, saying, “I feel lucky that I can still see my own funeral and experience things that others cannot experience. The final realisation in life is that no matter how great the things you do or how great a person you become, in the end we will die the same way.”

“We don’t have to please anyone, as long as we have the courage to do the right thing and be worthy of our mission, that’s enough,” he added.

He also denied it to be an April Fool’s joke, but stated that the decision to hold it on the date was due to it being close to the Ching Ming Festival, aka Tomb-Sweeping Day, which falls on 4 April.

As for some fans who said that they will now unfollow him over him making fun of such a taboo subject, Namewee simply regarded them as fake fans. He believes that his true fans will understand the significance of the event, as he has held more exaggerated events in the past.

“These are things Namewee would do. It is not surprising at all. If a creator does not innovate, it is tantamount to dereliction of duty! Those who stick to the rules all day long, are afraid of the government, public opinion, media, and being scolded, do it because they are afraid of losing profits. If you are really a fan of Namewee, you will understand this,” he added.

Namewee is elated to announce that he will be holding his world tour, which will kick off at the Taipei Arena.

The Malaysian singer shared the good news on social media on 20 February, saying that the Namewee Big Bird tour will be set sailing after three years, first in Taiwan and then the rest of the globe.

“The first stop will be held at the Taipei Arena on 1 April 2023 (not kidding!) and tickets will be officially open on 25 February. The itinerary of other cities and countries will be announced at the upcoming press conference, so stay tuned friends from all over the world!” he posted.

Namewee, who is celebrating his 16th year anniversary in music, also added that he was overwhelmed by feelings as his dream of holding his tour did not come easily.

At the same time, he is elated to be performing first in Taiwan, saying that he considered the island his second home, where he studied and created songs, and where the fans are very supportive of him.

“I am very grateful to Taiwan, and I am so happy to finally have this day,” he added.

Namewee recently had everybody speculating, after he took to Instagram Story to accuse someone of raping his female friend.

On 15 January, the Malaysian singer-songwriter posted a series of accusations on the social media platform, saying that a particular person violated his friend without wearing a condom, adding that the said person would have been put behind bars if caught in their home country.

He added that posting about it doesn’t mean that they weren’t going to report the issue, but that they are going to wait for the right time.

In another post, Namewee said that his said friend only wanted to meet her idol, but instead was treated in the most heinous way.

“What would you do if she got pregnant? How old is she? Is it difficult to go out with a condom in your wallet? Is it difficult to pull out?” he asked.

As to why the woman did not go to the police quickly after the incident, he wrote, “Do you think that if she calls the police, or holds a press conference in the newspaper, will the idiot fans of [that person] believe her? Will the general public believe her? Or will they put the blame on her?”

He also had everybody guessing that the singer in question is a Hong Kong artiste who is well-known in mainland China, after criticising the man in Cantonese for betraying his birth place for money, and that the man would be put behind bars and “become roommates with Toothpick” if he was caught in his motherland.

Namewee’s posts have led to a lot of speculations online about who he is talking about. There could be more information coming to light soon.

Namewee recently expressed his sadness over the passing of Malaysian songbird Adibah Noor.

The singer-songwriter took to Instagram to express his thoughts over the tragic news of her passing on 18 June with a photo of him alongside the singer.

He wrote, “I’m shocked that our Malaysian national treasure and legendary actress @adibahnoormohdomar had just passed away due to cancer…”

“It’s still hard for me to accept the fact… I’m really honoured and proud to have you in my movie – Nasi Lemak 2.0. Us Malaysians will forever miss our Kak Noor,” he added.

In “Nasi Lemak 2.0”, released in 2011, Adibah played the role of a mysterious hawker stall lady, who helped Chef Huang embark on an extraordinary journey of his life.

Adibah Noor passed away in the evening of 18 June, after battling ovarian cancer in silence for a while. She was 51.
