Hong Kong celebrities young and old recently gathered at the Hong Kong Coliseum to remember Leslie Cheung as 1 April 2023 marked the 20th anniversary of the superstar’s passing.

Stars, including Sandra Ng, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Louis Koo, Dicky Cheung, Joyce Cheng and even his partner Daffy Tong had things to say about the actor and singer, who breathed his last back on 1 April 2003.

In a video shared at the event, Tony spoke about their movie collaboration, saying, “In the spring of ’90, you and I worked together for the first time. You became the Best Actor; in the fall of ’94, you taught me to bury a watermelon in the desert. You always had endless mischievous ideas; in winter ’96, you promised me to go to Iguazu. In the end only one made it.”

“In summer ‘01, you personally presented the award to me, and I kept the promise between me and you on the stage. All the seasons of the past, the highs and lows, rises and falls you were all there. Today let us experience your seasons anew,” he added.

As for Sandra, the actress said that she first came to know Leslie when she was 14.

“When I first got into the business, you put me in your music video. Thank you, my music video lover; the inspiration of love, the spring of career, they were all because of you.”

Many stars, from Leon Lai to Kelly Chen also performed at the concert. Singer Joyce Cheng performed the song, “Past Year Love” from Leslie’s 1986’s “A Better Tomorrow”, while Dicky, who won the New Talent contest by performing Leslie’s “Love Cross” performed several hits and teared up as he sang the last song. Meanwhile, Vivian Chow performed “If You Knew My Good Intention”, the song Leslie wrote for her.

Prior to the concert, Leslie’s former manager Florence Chan led fans to present flowers and mourn in silence outside the venue.

Despite previous reports that he is set to work with Nick Cheung in the actor’s upcoming directorial effort, Terrance Lau recently revealed that nothing has been confirmed just yet.

As reported on Mingpao, the actor, who spoke to the media recently, stated that he is currently in the communication stage with the said Hong Kong star.

“Nick stated that he has a movie in the works, and as far as I know, the character I may be playing doesn’t have any action scene, so it could be a dramatic movie,” he said.

However, Terrance stated that he would love an opportunity to work with the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) Best Actor, as he grew up watching Nick’s movies.

“I hope to learn from him by working together,” he added.

Asked if there is any pressure from the thought of working with Nick, Terrance stated that the actor has been very kind to him following their communications.

“He treats me like a friend, so there is no pressure. But the film subject would be rather serious, so it is no laughing matter,” he said.

One of the rising stars in Hong Kong at the moment, Terrance’s most recent film is “Anita”, where he portrays the beloved Hong Kong star Leslie Cheung.

It looks like audiences will now be able to watch Longman Leung’s more than four hour cut of the biopic, “Anita” after all.

It was revealed that the director’s cut of the movie will be released on Disney+ as part of its 2022 APAC (Asia Pacific) release.

The director’s cut will be presented in five instalments of 45-minute episode each, with the movie having an extra hour of content that was cut from the original film.

The movie will begin airing on Disney+ every Wednesday beginning 2 February.

Released last year, “Anita” is a biopic about Hong Kong Cantopop queen Anita Mui, depicting her life from childhood through her last moments prior to her death in 2003. It stars Louise Wong in the lead, as well as other stars like Gordon Lam, Louis Koo, Fish Liew, and Terrance Law.

Wong Kar Wai succeeded in auctioning his first NFT – a footage of his most famous film, “In the Mood For Love” (2000).

The film auteur recently collaborated with Sotheby’s Hong Kong in auctioning the “In the Mood for Love” NFT, making it the first Asian film NFT to be offered, which attracted a lot of bids at the Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale.

The said NFT is a never-before-seen 92-second footage that was filmed on 13 February 1999, which is the first day that the movie was in production.

The starting bid was HKD 2 million, and in the end was sold at HKD 4.28 million with buyer’s premium to Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, Patti Wong.

On the other hand, the said NFT was not the only item that was auctioned at the event. Around 30 items related to Wong’s films also found new owners, from the yellow leather jacket that Leslie Cheung wore in “Happy Together” (sold for HKD 756,000), to “The Grandmaster” poster signed by the said director (sold for HKD252,000).

The highly-anticipated biopic, “Anita” has been chosen to be the closing film at the upcoming 26th Busan International Film Festival.

As reported on Oriental Daily, the movie, which will chronicle the life of legendary singer Anita Mui, will be holding its global premiere at the festival on 15 October.

Speaking about the film selection, director Longman Leung expressed, “I am very honoured that “Anita” was selected to be this year’s Busan Film Festival closing film. This film wasn’t just a chronicle of an era, but we also tried our best to revive the memory of this Daughter of Hong Kong of ours.”

It is noted that Longman is no stranger to the Busan festival, having had his first film, “Cold War” opening the festival in 2012.

On the other hand, lead actress Wang Danni (Louise Wong) is also elated over the news, expressing hope that more people would be able to learn and understand more about Anita’s life through this film.

“I hope that people will start listening to her songs and watch her movies again after watching this film,” she added.

The upcoming “Missing You Leslie Cheung” virtual concert has added two more performers to its line-up in the likes of Sam Hui and Hacken Lee.

As reported on Apple Daily, Hacken, who spoke to the media about his participation, stated that he would be performing Leslie’s song, “For Your Heart Only” at the upcoming concert, saying that it was a favourite of his that he has repeatedly performed in his own shows.

Asked if he knew Leslie in person, Hacken said that he and the late singer share a lot of mutual friends and so, they used to stumble across each other at dinner parties.

“I even had the fortune of singing karaoke with him. It was like winning the lottery,” he said.

On the other hand, Sam Hui, who also previously held his own online show, will be performing Leslie’s “Silence is Golden”.

Previously, it was reported that Karen Mok and Julian Cheung will be involved in the said show, with Karen performing “Blamefully Beautiful” and Julian to sing “The Wind Continues to Blow” at the show.

The upcoming concert will be held on 1 April. All proceeds from the show will be donated to Food Angel HK to help those in need.

Lawrence Cheng recently revealed that he has recently been granted the permission from Leslie Cheung’s former manager Florence Chan and life partner Daffy Tong to hold a special virtual commemorative concert in remembrance of Leslie’s 18th year of passing.

As reported on Mingpao, the Hong Kong multi-hyphenate shared the news recently, saying that they will be holding a special concert on 1 April – the day of Leslie’s passing – called “Missing You Leslie Cheung” to help cheer fellow countrymen around the world and spread positive energy during this pandemic.

“I think that if Leslie was still alive, he would agree with the decision. The title of the concert also came from Daffy,” he said.
