Karen Mok is set to perform on the Golden Melody Awards’ stage for the first time after a decade.

The Hong Kong singer is set to be joined by The Masters for a surprise performance, which she described as a reunion with “old friends she hasn’t seen in a long time.”

In addition to seeing familiar musical partners, she also looks forward to feeling the energy of the new generation in the music scene.

While performing classic works, Karen said that she also hopes to bring the audience a refreshing look, expressing, “This setlist is a very pleasant surprise, and I look forward to bringing it to the live audience.”

Other performers include Hebe Tien, who will be performing on the Golden Melody stage for the first time in six years, as well as May Sun, who will make her Golden Melody stage debut.

The upcoming Golden Melody Awards will be held on 27 June.

Just like many Sing Girls before and after her, Karen Mok admitted that Stephen Chow has played a big role in the success of her career in showbiz.

As reported on HK01, the jazz star, who accepted an interview to promote her new album, “The Voyage” recently, stated that Stephen had an “absolute critical” impact on her career, following their work together in films like “A Chinese Odyssey”, “Out of the Dark”, and “The God of Cookery”.

“At the time, I took several movies by Stephen in one breath. I didn’t even care at the time, but I was lucky in retrospect. The first time we worked together was in “A Chinese Odyssey” in 1995. It was also my first time playing a heroine,” she said.

Karen stated that unlike his movie characters, Stephen is a very serious person in real life.

“I learned to focus from him. He can give 200 percent attention to his work. What an expert. His brain works very fast and won’t just think of how to act the scene, but the whole scene as well and would often delve into the script with the director,” she said.

Karen admitted that the said film is still her most favourite project.

“First of all, I love the character I played. Second of all, I like ancient costumes very much. Very few people offered me to star in a period film though I really look forward to doing more of those,” she said.

She also enjoyed playing an ugly woman in “The God of Cookery”, stating that she was jumping for joy when told by Stephen that she would wear prosthetic teeth and a scar on her eyes for the character.

“It’s very rare to get to play a different role from others,” she added.

Karen Mok recently admitted that she feels extremely guilty for her previous wardrobe issue, and the fact that she didn’t have ample time to address the controversy due to her concert schedule.

As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who had been busy with her Hong Kong Coliseum show for the past couple of days, recently addressed the backlash against her wearing a Dolce & Gabbana outfit for her music video, “A Woman For All Seasons 2021”, stating that the mistake was made because of her carelessness when it comes to the details.

“I really was negligent. I usually do not pay any attention to what outfit the stylist gives me. As long as they fit me, I wouldn’t ask much. This is a good lesson. You must always pay attention to the most subtle things in the future,” she said.

When mentioned that she worked with Ma Tianyo’s team for the MV styling, Karen stressed that it was a mistake by all parties and not just an individual or a stylist.

“We all have responsibilities as a team. No one wants that to happen,” she added.

As for the MV, which has been removed from all platforms due to the controversy, Karen stated that she has yet to do anything to deal with it.

Karen Mok recently sparked mainland netizens’ anger after choosing to wear clothing from the luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana.

As reported on Mingpao, the issue sparked recently, after the singer posted a photo of her in a colourful D&G outfit as her profile picture on the Chinese social media site, Weibo.

Netizens who saw the photo immediately slammed Karen in the comments, accusing the singer of insulting China for wearing clothes from the said brand.

“You wear the brand to make money from us? Excuse me?” one follower commented.

“After D&G insulted China, you were the first one to wear it!” said another.

Although the singer had since changed her profile picture, the damage has been done, with thousands of netizens declaring that they will stop supporting her.

It is noted that the said outfit was actually worn by Karen in the music video of her song, “Woman For All Seasons” that is part of her new album, “The Voyage”. The said MV has also been removed from all platforms.

After the success of “Breathing is Hazardous”, Karen Mok recently surprised fans with a new single titled, “To Shed a Tear For You”.

As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who released her new song on 19 March, revealed that she was contacted by music producer Juno Mak about releasing another song while she was in Europe with her husband Johannes last year.

It is noted that Karen and Juno previously worked together in the 2015 song, “Blemish”.

“We worked together to produce a work and so the song was born. The lyrics reveal how I feel after the success of “Breathing is Hazardous” last year. After working hard outside for many years, I was touched to achieve good results when I returned to Hong Kong with a new song. I was moved by the silent love and support from fans,” she said.

Karen stated that the title of the song was inspired by her old movie “A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella”, in which her character Pak Jingjing saw how her lover Joker (Stephen Chow) had fallen for Zixia (Athena Chu) instead after seeing how he left a single tear at the latter leaving.

“The hidden message in the lyrics is that if one day I am to part with the fans, will everybody still miss me?” she said.

On the other hand, Karen, whose Hong Kong concert was postponed earlier due to the pandemic, revealed that she is planning to hold it in June this year and is looking forward for everything to go well.

Karen Mok has recently won two Best Song awards for her song, “Breathing is Hazardous”, Mingpao reported.

The singer, who released the said song during the height of the pandemic last year, received the Gold Prize at the TVB Jade Solid Gold Awards on 17 January, as well as the Global Chinese Ultimate Gold Song at the 43rd Top Ten Chinese Gold Song awards, which was aired the night before.

Speaking about the creation of the song, Karen stated that it was born under the pandemic, and was compatible with the situation that everybody was going through at the time.

“The whole world was suddenly shifting and changing and everybody can resonate with that,” she said.

Karen stated that as a singer who has been working in the industry for many years, it is crucial that she could bring joy to everybody amid the pain.

She also took to Instagram to express her happiness over the honour, writing, “Where words fail, music speaks.”
