Just like most of award-winning filmmakers, John Woo too is not fond of superhero movies.

The director, who is currently promoting his new movie “Silent Night”, shared in an interview with The New Yorker that he has never been a fan of films with big special effects or anything based on comic books.

“I prefer Martin Scorsese’s movies, that kind of cinema. I can’t wait to watch ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. I like old-fashioned movies, you know? Real cinema. There aren’t many movies like that lately,” he said.

As for the recent action movie he liked the most, Woo stated that he loved the 2016 movie, “Hell or High Water”, directed by David Mackenzie.

“Silent Night”, which is a movie without any dialogue, marks Woo’s Hollywood comeback after years of hiatus. It tells the story of a tormented father who embarks on a mission of vengeance to avenge his son’s death in a gang’s crossfire.

While the two were THE greatest duo during Hong Kong’s Golden Era of filmmaking, director John Woo recently admitted that it would be difficult for him to work with Chow Yun Fat again in the future.

As reported on HK01, in a recent interview to promote his Hollywood comeback movie, “Silent Night”, the filmmaker pointed out that the difficulty he meant regarding another collaboration with Chow is more about the story than anything else.

“We are getting older and it would be hard to find the right script,” he said. “[But] I still want to be like Clint Eastwood and make movies that bring the protagonist back to his former glory.”

Despite previous rumours that they had a falling out after Chow departed from his movie, “Red Cliff”, John has nothing but praise for the actor, calling him an outstanding performer.

“When we were doing ‘A Better Tomorrow’ [in 1986], Chow had failed. For three years, everyone made fun of him and the movies he starred in were all flops. I was also in the same situation and was made fun of, so he felt that the dialogue I created seemed to be coming from the bottom of his heart,” he said.

John Woo has finally found the right man to star in the reimagining of his 1989 crime movie, “The Killer”.

According to Deadline, French actor Omar Sy, most known for Netflix’s “Lupin”, will play the lead, possibly the new version of Chow Yun-Fat’s disillusioned assassin, Ah Jong.

It was earlier this year that John Woo announced that he will be making his directorial comeback via the movie, which will debut on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock in 2023.

The original movie, which became a big hit, tells the story of Ah Jong, who accepts one last hit job in hopes to use the money to restore the vision of a singer he accidentally blinded. The film made HKD 18.255 million at the box office in 1989.

No news as to whether the reimagining will have a similar storyline.

It was reported that Hong Kong action auteur John Woo is set to make his Hollywood comeback with the new action flick, “Silent Night”.

As reported on Deadline, the upcoming project will star Joel Kinnaman (“Suicide Squad”), and will revolve around a father who heads into the underworld to avenge his young son’s death.

However, the said movie reportedly will not have a word of dialogue – hence the title.

It is noted that it has been nearly 20 years since Woo made his last English-language movie, with the last one being the Ben Affleck-starrer, “Paycheck”. He then returned to Asian cinema and completed the two-part epic war period film, “Red Cliff”.

If it comes to fruition, the movie will be a great project for Woo, who will be able to flex his action aesthetics, white doves and wuxia-like gun fights and all.
