Mark Chao recently admitted that he purposefully declined a lot of romance fantasy dramas following the success of the 2017 mainland drama, “Eternal Love”.

In a recent interview, the Taiwanese actor said that he actually received many offers to star in similar fantasy romance dramas, which also came with high remunerations. However, he decided to reject most of them, especially the ones that had similar scripts to the hit show.

As to why he did so, Mark frankly stated that he greatly admires the character “Ye Hua” and the story of “Eternal Love” and believes that taking on similar roles while the character is still popular would be “exploiting the character,” ruining the positive impression of the classic image in the audience’s mind.

The actor also stated that he was worried that if he repeated those similar roles, the audience would view all his subsequent works through the lens of “Ye Hua,” permanently binding his acting career to a single label.

He also admitted that turning down such offers did cost him a chance to earn a lot of money. However, he was able to gain new experiences by playing lots of other character roles.
