Despite having been married for seven years, Venus Wong recently stated that she and husband Derek Tsang have agreed to focus more on their relationship and careers rather than pursuing parenthood.

In a recent interview, the actress, who rarely spoke about her married life with the director, stated her belief that people should live according to their own plans and not according to other people’s expectations.

This decision, she said, stemmed from her own experience of raising her younger brother from a young age, saying that it made her understand deeply that it’s a huge responsibility and a long term one.

Venus said that she practically considers the various issues that will arise when her child grows up, and this overly “rational” thinking has also made her more cautious about having children.

As for her own relationship with Derek, Venus admitted that she has rarely “shown affection” on social media in recent years, believing that social media often becomes a source of pressure to present a certain state to the outside world.

“But what you see is only one side of the story,” she added.

Venus Wong has no qualms working with her director husband Derek Tsang and father-in-law Eric Tsang, that is if such an opportunity ever arises.

However, the actress, who tied the knot with the “Soul Mate” director in 2019, stated that despite being interested in doing so, having all three of them together in one project would be quite impossible.

“I can do it anytime, but their schedules are more complex, especially Eric, who is very busy. I admire him hosting “Super Trio Returns” despite his schedule. I know he is very tired, physically and mentally. I really want him to rest for the sake of the family,” she said.

However, Venus stated that seeing how Eric works gave her a sense of mission, and that it made her want to do a good job as well.

On the other hand, when asked if Derek’s absence ever affected their relationship, seeing that the director travelled to lots of places for his projects, Venus stated that the two always keep in touch.

“When I don’t have anything to do, I would fly to accompany him. But I can’t help it when I have work to do. It’s a healthy thing for everyone to work hard for their goals,” she added.

Derek Tsang is finally back in Hong Kong after a year in the UK.

As reported on Mingpao, the director, who appeared at Tatler Hong Kong’s charity event recently, shared that he had been busy focusing on the Netflix series, “The Three-Body Problem” in Britain, working alongside “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

“I haven’t seen my wife [Venus Wong] for almost ten months. We haven’t gone on our honeymoon for the past three years of our marriage, so we’re planning to go to Italy after work is done,” said Derek.

Asked if dad Eric Tsang, who is now a TVB Executive, has called him for help with the broadcaster, the filmmaker stated that such a thing would never happen.

“We all work independently and avoid cooperation,” he said.

Derek’s upcoming series, based on Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name, tells the story of what happens when humanity discovers that we are not alone in the universe and prepares for an alien force arriving from a distant and inhospitable world.

It stars Eiza González and Benedict Wong among others.

Eric Tsang recently laughed off rumours that son Derek Tsang and his actress wife Venus Wong have called it quits on their marriage.

The TVB Executive, who appeared alongside his said daughter-in-law at the press conference of her new series, stated that the rumour came out a day after he had dinner with the two of them.

“Maybe they got divorce that day and got married again the next day,” he said with a laugh.

Asked if he attended the press conference with Venus in order to quell the rumour, Eric said that he is not worried at all about the couple.

“These things are funny. When we are in the entertainment industry, there will always be some kind of news. But it’s better than no news at all. It’s always a rumour, so treat it as a joke,” he said.

Earlier, Venus and Derek were rumoured to have separated, after netizens noticed that her six-ring tattoos that she had on her fingers to mark her marriage to the director seemed to have been removed.

The actress later explained that the tattoos had to be covered with make-up whenever she is filming a drama and that she and her husband are doing fine.

Venus Wong has recently dismissed rumours that there is trouble in paradise in her marriage with filmmaker Derek Tsang.

As reported on Mingpao, rumours of marital woe sparked recently, after eagle-eyed netizens noticed that she seemed to have removed her photos with her husband from social media.

Fuelling the rumours further was the fact that her wedding tattoos could not be seen on her fingers anymore.

In response to the speculations, Venus shared a photo of herself, in which the two three-line tattoos she had on her middle and ring fingers were clearly visible.

She also responded through her manager, “We’re fine, thank you for your concern.”

Venus explained that she did not remove her tattoos, but that they had to be covered with make-up whenever she is filming a drama.

As for the lack of photos with Derek on social media, Venus explained that she reorganised her Instagram for work purposes, but that the photos were not deleted.

Hong Kong filmmaker Derek Tsang, son of actor-producer Eric Tsang, is set to helm the Netflix adaptation of “Three-Body Problem”.

The director, known for his movies like “Better Days” and “Soul Mate”, will be helming the series based on Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, which tells the story of what happens when humanity discovers other entities in the universe.

Aside from directing, Derek is also set to co-executive produce the said project.

The series was first announced last year, with “Game of Thrones” alumni David Benioff and D.B. Weis as its showrunners. It was later reported that actress Eiza Gonzalez is in talks to play a role in the series.

A multi-award winning filmmaker, Derek’s highest achievement was his film being nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards in the Best International Film category for his movie, “Better Days”.

Even though his movie “Better Days” did not win the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, Derek Tsang assured that he is not at all disappointed by the result.

As reported on Mingpao, the Hong Kong filmmaker, who spoke to the media about the loss, stated that he is thankful to all the audience who supported and liked the movie – stressing that reaching the top five in the said category after besting numerous titles from around the world was achievement enough.

“I’m really honoured and grateful to represent Hong Kong and participate in the Oscars with a Chinese-language film. Knowing that I still have many shortcomings, I will continue to work hard and hope to produce better works,” he said.

On the other hand, Derek’s equally famous father Eric Tsang stated that the whole family watched the ceremony online on the day of the event.

It is noted that TVB decided not to air the event this year for the first time in over 50 years.

“The eldest daughter is in Taiwan, the second one in Canada, and Derek did not fly to the United States. Although they were in different places, they still watched the live stream together,” he enthused.

Eric stated with pride that while Derek did not win, the filmmaker is still better and more successful than his old man.

The Best International Feature accolade went to Danish film, “Another Round” directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen.

The upcoming 93rd Academy Awards will not be broadcast in Hong Kong for the first time since 1969 amid backlash from mainland China regarding some of the nominees.

TVB – the official channel of the Academy Awards since 1969 – stated that it was nothing political. The broadcasting company revealed to the media recently that it has made the decision not to continue broadcasting the event this year, and that it was a “purely commercial consideration.”

However, none of the other broadcasters like ViuTV, NowTV, and others have decided to pick up the rights.

The ‘commercial consideration’ reason given by TVB was not easily accepted by netizens, who stated that this year’s event – more than ever – should be aired since a movie directed by Hong Kong director Derek Tsang, “Better Days”, has been shortlisted in the Best International Feature Film category for the first time in 20 years. Moreover, Derek Tsang is also the son of TVB’s new Deputy General Manager of Entertainment, Eric Tsang.

Derek Tsang’s ‘Better Days’ is nominated in Best International Feature Film

It is noted that China has previously called for a boycott against the said awards for nominating “Nomadland”, the movie helmed by Chloe Zhao, the first female Asian filmmaker to earn a spot in the said awards. This comes after Zhao’s past interviews calling the country where she grew up in a land “full of lies” were dug up by netizens.

Another title that angered China was Anders Hammer’s documentary, “Do Not Split”, which was nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject. The documentary itself is about the anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (anti-ELAB) movement in Hong Kong.

The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, 25th April 2021.

Derek Tsang’s “Better Days” has landed a nomination for the Best International Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.

As reported on Mingpao, the Zhou Dongyu-starrer, which bagged eight accolades at the Hong Kong Film Awards last year, will be competing against the likes of Denmark’s “Another Round” and Tunisia’s “The Man Who Sold His Skin”.

It is noted that the movie will be the first film from Hong Kong to make it to the said category 18 years after Chen Kaige’s “Farewell My Concubine”.

Speaking to the media about the nomination, an excited Derek expressed, “I am so happy that this movie was supported and liked by audiences in different countries. At the same time I would like to thank all the people working in front of and behind the scenes for their hard work. I am so grateful.”

Derek posted his thanks and gratitude on social media

Better Days’ is about a bullied teenage school girl who forms an unlikely friendship with a young man who protects her

Asked if he has told his father Eric Tsang about it, Derek stated that he did, though the newly-appointed TVB Deputy General Manager has yet to respond.

“I am not sure yet if I will go to the US to attend the event in person,” he added.

He also took to social media to express his happiness over the nomination, writing, “Never thought we could make it this far. So blessed!! My most sincere thanks n love to everyone who helped us along the way!!”

Other nominees include Romania’s “Collective” and “Quo Vadis, Aida?” from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
