Akihito Tsukushi’s manga series, “Made in Abyss” is next in line to receive a feature adaptation.

The series, which has been adapted into an anime TV series and a sequel film in 2017, will be adapted by Kevin McMullin for Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment, which will be producing along with Masi Oka’s Mobius Productions.

It is noted that Vertigo and Mobius previously worked together on the live-action projects, “Death Note”, with the latter producing adaptations of “The Promised Neverland” and “Attack on Titan”.

On the other hand, McMullin had previously written and directed the feature film, “Low Tide”.

“Made in Abyss” tells the story of the orphan girl Riko, who goes on an adventure alongside her robot friend Reg as she seeks to find her mother who’s presumed dead after descending into a giant hole deep in the earth called the Abyss.

From playing the Mother of Dragons in the fantasy world of “Game of Thrones”, Emilia Clarke is now making her comic book debut through the superhero mini-series she created, “Mother of Madness”.

The actress, who has been working on the project for several years now, revealed that the idea started almost as a joke, when she and her friends started playing the “if game”. “It really started with a “Wouldn’t it be funny if…” conversation in a car on the way to a gig. We were like, “Wouldn’t that be mad if you sort of…?” Because we were talking about how mums are like superheroes, women have this incredible ability to have so much going on and manage to achieve all of those things. It’s almost superpowered,” said Clarke. “We were laughing and joking about how this would be, and then it just stuck with me. I was like, “You know what? It would be really funny. It would be really cool. I think we should do it.” And so I stuck to my guns and I carried on doing it.”

Describing the comic as Deadpool-esque, Clarke stated she started the all-female creative team of M.O.M that include illustrator Leila Leiz, contributor Isobel Richardson, and cover artist Jo Ratcliffe to bring about the story of Maya, a single mother, chemical engineer and superhero whose powers derive from her menstrual cycle.

“For there to be something like this, where it’s fun, and it’s bright, and it’s for lots of people – but also is continually reminding young women and young men that it’s good to be individual, it’s good to have feelings. There are ways in which you can live with them and not feel like you’re doing the wrong thing all the time, and that your views and your feelings are bad or wrong. They’re actually superpowered, because that’s what makes you you; that’s what makes you an individual. It’s how we make things; it’s how we make better people. So, that’s a very big goal. I’m going to come nowhere near to achieving it. But that was the reason why. If this comic educates and inspires then, my God, I’m going to be very, very happy,” she said.

The three-issue miniseries is set to be launched on 21 July. Who knows ..Netflix might pick it up for a live-action adaptation as it did with Keanu Reeve’s comic book “BRZRKR”.

The highly-anticipated anime adaptation of horror mangaka Junji Ito’s “Uzumaki” has been delayed to 2022.

The project, which was announced back in 2019, was originally scheduled for a 2020 release, but faced production halts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a video statement on YouTube, director Hiroshi Nagahama stated that the pandemic had a huge impact on the anime industry in Japan, especially for the production of “Uzumaki”.

“It’s also true that we had to restructure our plan from the start. But it’s definitely starting to come together,” he added.

The four-episode miniseries will stay true to its black-and-white original comic in respect of Ito’s style – making it much more eerie than if done in colour.

There has been a live-action adaptation of the highly popular title, though many believed that it did not fully capture the horror of the actual story.

“Uzumaki”, which was released as a serial on “Big Comic Spirits” from 1998 to 1999, follows Kirie Goshima, a teenage girl who lives in a remote town called Kurouzu-cho where the residents are afflicted by a horrifying spiraling curse.

Another comic book adaptation is currently in the works, as James Bond director Cary Fukunaga is set to helm a new project based on the Image Comics series, “Tokyo Ghost”.

The upcoming project, to be produced by Legendary Pictures, will revolve around the two main characters of the said ten-issue 2015 sci-fi series – Debbie Decay and Led Dent; peacekeepers working in 2089’s cyberpunk world of future Los Angeles, who are looking to work in the final tech-less county on Earth known as the Garden Nation of Tokyo.

Rick Remender, creator of the comic series, will be penning the script.

It is noted that this is not the first Remender’s comic series that has been adapted, after “Deadly Class” was made into a one season series on Syfy back in 2019.

On the other hand, Fukunaga, who is known for movies like 2016’s “Beasts of No Nation” and 2011’s “Jane Eyre”, is prepping up for the release of his James Bond film, “No Time to Die” – slated for 8 October release.

Keanu Reeves is on the roll. After the success of his many films of late, it was revealed that the actor will have his comic book “BRZRKR” turned into both a live-action adaptation and animated series by Netflix.

Netflix shared the good news on Twitter by posting an image of Reeves’ said comic book, stating, “Exciting news! Netflix is developing a live-action film AND follow up anime series based on Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000 year fight through the ages.”

The streaming giant also added that the two projects will also be co-produced, starred and voiced (for the animated series) by Reeves himself.

The comic book’s lead character is an immortal, who coincidentally looks like Keanu Reeves himself
