You may have laughed at the supposedly ugly 3D animation or the negative reviews mocking the movie, but it has been revealed that the homegrown animated film, “Niu Lai” (“Here Comes the Ox”), has now made over RMB 20 million at the box office in China.

Released on 5 August, the film originally earned only RMB 7,711 in cumulative nationwide box office receipts during its first 10 days. Fewer than 300 people had watched it, while the number of screenings had almost dropped to zero.

However, due to its extremely rough and amateurish production, and after clips from the film were widely parodied and circulated online, the movie has suddenly received much love, with audiences embracing it precisely because of how “bad” it was.

“You’ll regret watching it for 80 minutes, but you’ll regret not watching it for the rest of your life!” read one review.

It’s so bad that it’s unbelievably good

The film, which reportedly took over five years to make by director Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifang, tells the story of a young calf named Niu Lai who encounters a lark in a meadow and brings it into his dreams. There, the lark witnesses the calf bravely confronting danger and eventually becoming a warrior.

Director Xin Yumeng has since addressed the film’s overnight popularity on its official Weibo account, acknowledging that the production has its rough edges by mature theatrical animation standards, and said he has taken both the praise and criticism from audiences seriously.

Continuing its success after Japan, it was revealed Monsta’s popular animated series, “Mechamato” is set to premiere in Portugal next month.

The news was shared by the series itself through its official social media accounts, stating, “Guess what! Mechamato is coming to Portugal via Sic Kids channel, the biggest kids channel in Portugal!”

Sic Kids, or Sociedade Independente de Comunicacao, is a popular TV station in the said European country.

The series will also be dubbed in the country’s vernacular language.

Speaking about the good news, Monsta’s Head of Marketing, Faiz Zainal Abidin, said that the company is excited to be able to entertain children from all corners of the world through their respective mother tongues.

“The strength of the Mechamato series lies in the storyline that focuses on pure values, friendship and culture. Mechamato is famous for combining modern technology without neglecting elements of local tradition. By using Bandar Hilir Melaka as a source of inspiration, the Mechamato series showcased the historical area as a location theme,” he said.

“We hope that in this way, young viewers in Portugal and around the world who have the opportunity to watch Mechamato can learn a little more about the history and culture of our country,” Faiz added.

After the lacklustre reception to its final season, sources are now confirming
that HBO is looking into producing an animated version of the George R.R.
Martin’s fantasy franchise “Game of Thrones”.

The idea of the project is
said to be in a very early stage, with no concept or creative team on board,
and HBO is declining to make any official comments about the possibility of
reintroducing the show as an animation.

The studio is already juggling
several other projects involving George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire”
universe, with prequel, “House of the Dragon” expected to debut in 2022.

Meanwhile, it was reported early this week that there could be another
series adaptation of the writer’s “Tales of Dunk & Egg” which follows the
adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.

HBO is also in talks of adapting Dunk & Egg

Another one of these prequels
– a project written by Jane Goldman and starring Naomi Watts – was not picked
up by the studio immediately following the backlash against “Game of Thrones”
finale.

If the project does come to fruition, it would be good news for
many fans of the original series, who had been asking for it for years – with
some of the more creative ones sharing their own artistic take of the animated
version.

The animation scene in Malaysia continues to grow. As announced today by Primeworks Studios and animation production studio WAU Animation, the popular animated series “Ejen Ali” is now showing in China.

This is done through the strategic partnership between Primeworks Studios and WAU Animation with China’s biggest video streaming platform, Tencent Video.

The content partnership deal is brokered with CAWRO, the programme’s official distributor in China.

Within just four days of its release on the platform, “Ejen Ali” has already set a record as one of the Top Three highly-rated overseas programmes on it.

Chief Executive Officer of WAU Animation, Usamah Zaid Yasin, said in a statement, “It’s always exciting to see our work meet new audiences, so we hope the series will be equally well received in China.

“The dream of course is to then bring the series’ next instalment, “Ejen Ali: The Movie” to the big theatre screens in China, so we remain hopeful that can be a reality as the country and the entertainment industry move into the recovery stage from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Meanwhile, Dato’ Khairul Anwar Salleh, Chief Executive Officer of Primeworks Studios and Media Prima Television Networks, stated that the partnership with CAWRO is a strategic move in expanding the “Ejen Ali” brand to international level.

Animation production company Les’ Copaque Production Sdn Bhd has set yet
another sensational phenomenon, as the new song “Goyang Upin & Ipin” from
its popular “Upin & Ipin” animated series is getting positive reception.

The difference featured by Les’ Copaque this time is
the rhythm and dance borrowed from neighbouring country Indonesia, namely
dangdut, since the animated series has long been part of the country’s market.

The music video for it, which was uploaded to the official Les’ Copaque
Channel on YouTube on 3 August, broke records when it was viewed for more than
a million times within just 24 hours.

At the time of writing, the roughly 5-minute long MV has reached more than 3
million views with more than 78,000 likes. Furthermore, the hashtag
#GoyangUpinIpin is now trending on social media.

However, there are a few Malaysia netizens that question Les’ Copaque’s
decision to feature another country’s culture instead of featuring Malaysia’s
abundance of various traditional music.

“Dear Les’ Copaque, my kids and I really like “Upin & Ipin”. We love all
the traditional and cultural elements that are included in it. But this is not
appropriate. This is a Nusantara style of ‘bergelek’ (dancing with body
rolling movements).

“The show shouldn’t be teaching kids how to ‘bergelek’. Showcasing Indonesian
culture is good, but not dangdut,” a Twitter user posted.

Despite that, there are also many that take a more positive view on it and
think of it as Les’ Copaque’s strategy to maintain and strengthen the animated
series’ presence in Indonesia.

Since the first day “BoBoiBoy Movie 2” (BBBM2) was screened simultaneously in five different countries, the reception towards it had been so phenomenal that it managed to set a new record with its RM30 million box office collection, making it the highest-grossing Malaysian animated film in history.

Even though a year has passed, the film by animation studio Animonsta Studios (Monsta) continues making the nation proud worldwide with the many awards and recognitions it’s amassed.

Recently, BBMM2 was listed as among the finalists of the Best Animated Film category at Italy’s Florence Film Awards and the Best 3D Animation category at the New York Animation Film Awards 2020.

The latest nominations were announced after BBMM2 has just nabbed two awards from the Laurus Film Festival in Russia, for Best Poster and Best Trailer.

“I’m very grateful for the success that BBMM2 has achieved. I personally, nor the Monsta team, never hoped to win any prizes because what’s important was for us to introduce our animation to the world. If we win, that’s a bonus to us,” said Nizam to Cinema Online.

When asked whether Monsta has any plans to produce a “BoBoiBoy” trilogy, considering the phenomenal reception that the animation has received, Nizam said that they are already planning it.

“After the extraordinary success of BBMM2, we did plan to produce a third “BoBoiBoy” movie, but at the moment that is not our priority because we have a new animated film, “Mechamato”, which was supposed to be released this year but has to be postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He added that at the moment, they are unable to confirm a new release date for “Mechamato”, since the situation has yet to fully recover and cinemas nationwide still remain closed.

“Mechamato” is a prequel to “BoBoiBoy”, which tells the story of BoBoiBoy’s father.

Cinemas have been closed for well over two months now but hang tight, cinephiles, the big screen will once again bring enjoyment to us soon! Cinemas worldwide are gradually reopening as the threat of COVID-19 subsides and it won’t be long before our local cinemas follow suit.

In the meantime, let’s turn our attention to the world of animation and find out which animated films will be releasing in cinemas this year.

“The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on The Run”

At the moment, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on The Run” is set to be the first animated film from Hollywood to be released once cinemas resume operations. It’s currently scheduled to open either in late July or early August. Featuring characters from the popular “SpongeBob SquarePants” cartoon series, this third instalment of the “SpongeBob” movie franchise sees the titular yellow sponge and his best friend, Patrick the coral-pink starfish, on a mission to rescue SpongeBob’s pet snail, Gary, who has been *gasps* snail-napped!

“Doraemon: Nobita’s New Dinosaur”

“Doraemon: Nobita’s New Dinosaur”, which serves as the sequel to “Doraemon: Nobita`s Dinosaur” (both the 1980 original version and the 2006 remake), is made in celebration of the popular “Doraemon” franchise’s 50th anniversary. Local cinemas have yet to slot this in their release schedule but over in Japan, the anime film is slated to open this August, after the pandemic delayed its original March 2020 release. Though bearing similarities with the first movie, in terms of Nobita finding a dinosaur egg and taking care of the baby dino that hatches from it (this movie has two baby dinosaurs!), this sequel will feature a completely different story.

“Connected”

Previously called “The Mitchells vs. The Machines”, this animated sci-fi comedy now goes by the shorter title, “Connected”. It’s one of the highly anticipated animated films of this year as it bears the magic touches of producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo behind box office hits like the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, “The Lego Movie” and “21 Jump Street”. Set to open this October, the movie revolves around the Mitchells, whose family road trip is interrupted by a global tech uprising as electronic devices decide that it is time to take over from the humans.

“Soul”

Jamie Foxx leads this animated film as Joe Gardner, a music teacher who finds himself stuck in soul form after an accident causes it to be separated from his body. He must now work with souls in training at The Great Before, where each soul is developed and perfected before being sent off to Earth to live inside a person, in order to find a way to return to his own body before it’s too late. This movie might be reminiscent of “Inside Out”, since it is helmed and written by Pete Doctor, who also directed the award-winning 2015 film. Follow the spiritual journey of “Soul” in cinemas this November.

“The Croods 2”

This sequel to 2013’s “The Croods” almost didn’t happen despite the first movie being an Oscar and Golden Globe best film nominee. Production on it was cancelled in 2016 by DreamWorks, following its acquisition by Universal. However, a year later, the project was back on, set for a September 2020 theatrical release. Fast forward to this year, its release has now been pushed to December 2020. Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Peter Dinklage are among the stars who lend their voices to “The Croods 2”, which continues the adventures of a pre-historic family called the Croods.
