Chinese screenwriter and producer Yu Zheng recently decided to take all the blame for the failure of his ancient romance drama, “Untouchable Lovers,” after the drama suddenly became a trending topic on social media eight years after its release.
The drama, which was released in 2018, had recently been criticised again on social media, with netizens commenting on many things, including its chaotic storyline, outrageous costumes and the production’s failure to properly adapt it from its original novel.

Yu Zheng revealed that the original plan was to cast Yang Rong, an artiste under his management, and newcomer Mi Re, and the script was tailor-made for the female lead. However, a month before filming was scheduled to begin, the investors, considering the actors’ market appeal and their ability to carry the project, requested a change of lead actors.
Yu Zheng stated that they failed to reach a consensus during the negotiations, and ultimately Song Weilong and Guan Xiaotong were cast instead. He admitted that he eagerly increased the screen time of each character in order to prove that his actors were capable of carrying the series, which then caused imbalances in the plot.
However, the producer stressed that he is not blaming any actors, as they had tried their best. He specifically praised Song Weilong, Guan Xiaotong, and Bai Lu for their dedication and performance during filming.
As for the tone of the drama, Yu Zheng admitted that it was his fault for trying to break away from his past style, causing him to pursue the aesthetics too much.
