Although it was previously said that “The Boy and the Heron” will be Hayao Miyazaki’s final movie, Studio Ghibli is denying it, saying that the renowned filmmaker and animator has more up his sleeves.
Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka shared this recently, saying, “Other people say that [The Boy and the Heron] might be his last film, but he doesn’t feel that way at all. He is currently working on ideas for a new film. He comes into his office every day and does that.”
“This time, he’s not going to announce his retirement at all. He’s continuing working just as he has always done,” Nishioka added.
It is noted that “The Boy and the Heron” is Miyazaki’s first film in a decade, after 2013’s “The Wind Rises”.
“The Boy and the Heron” shares the same title as the 1937 novel by Genzaburo Yoshino. However, the movie has an original story that revolves around a boy named Mahito Maki who discovers an abandoned tower in his new town and enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron.
